The easy way is to set your wifi connection as metered under network settings, Win10 won't update by default on metered connections. But that won't work if you connect using ethernet cable.

I updated a laptop from 2009 to win 10 the day it came out and have had nothing but smooth sailing. Updates install when you reboot.

Luckily, I am fully converted to OpenOffice. No such shenanigans anymore and it's totally free. No need to reactivate every time I do something with my PC.My only gripe with auto updates is with Office 2013; I only have Word and Excel installed, but updates for Note, PP, etc. are applied. I used to be able to hide these, but no more. Sigh...
