With today's processors, onboard sound probably really isn't an issue CPU wise.

The main reason would be volume, quality, and if you wanted anything other than 2 speaker sound it'd almost be required to get a regular sound card.

A few % maybe :) I'd recommend a "real" soundcard anyway simply because the quality and features (like effects) of a regular card.

As far as I know, you do get a performance gain, but it would be minima, and I doubt you would even notice a difference. Buy a good sound card anyway :D.

With some of the onboard sounds that I've heard, it's almost better to disable it and not run sound. ;)

via 686 embedded sound can only play one audio stream at a time.
for example, cannot play a mp3 file and also play a wav file.

real hardware sound card like sb live can play 32 audio streams at a time.

i have compared the SB Live, Phillips Thunderbird based card (similar to Acoustic Edge) , and onboard sound on my Iwill Kk266 using my Midiland S4 speaker setup.. and i can't tell the difference.. so i just leave it off and use the onboard..

so.. um.. anyone wanna buy an SB Live or a Philips Acoustic Edge (Sorta, it's the I/OMagic Quad V8 which is basically a different name for same Philips card)
