dirty monitor

Use a Very soft cloth and Water Only, just dampen the cloth.
Many Monitor's/lcd's have a protective coating on them, and Windex could certainly ruin it.
 
I would recommend NOT using cleaners like Windex. They have specially formulated sprays and solutions for cleaning monitors. I use alcohol which is not on their recommended list but it's non corrosive so I see no problem with it. Monitors usually have a protective and anti-glare coating which gets eaten away and scratched by common cleaning solutions. Also take care not to use scratchy cloths or towels. It's best to use a non-lint cloth.

He said crt not lcd!

I spray the windex on the cloth then wipe, on crt only.

Unless your CRT is very old, it also has a protective coating on it. Almost all newer CRT's have an anti-glare coating and usually another protective coating.

Thus, cleaning solutions like Windex is definitely not good for monitors.
 
I use a small amount of Spectacle cleaner, followed by clen lukewarm water. Apply both with good quality tissues. Rub very gently. Finish off with a thick lint free terry tea towel, gently rubbing in circular motions to remove any streaking.

I find threatening to amputate fingers that stray too close to th e screen works wonders for keeping it clean too 😛
 
I have CRTs that are not "very old", and have used windex on them fine. Random speculation is not so useful as refraining from scare tactics until you know exactly what WILL cause damage. Mainly it would tend to be more industrial solvents, or abrasive cleaners.

On the other hand, some stubborn grime comes off better with alcohol than windex, I would try alcohol before windex if you have both available. My nephews' monitor for example- had his father's cigarette smoke all over it and being as he's just a kid, had let it build up a lot and water plus detergent just wouldn't cut through the tar.

You don't mention the dirt though, as with cleaning anything else what the dirt is comprised of can dictate which cleaners are effective.
 
Distilled water on a 100% cotton soft t shirt or kennsington monitor cleaner spray that you can get at any office depot.
