Dirty anthropologist needs a notebook.

Hi! I'm starting graduate studies in forensic & paleoanthropology this fall and I need a durable notebook, since I'll be taking it to the field and the field consists of burial sites, dirty labs, and dusty museums, hehe. Performance is not really that important - I'll be using it exclusively for data entry and light data analysis, word processing, and giving PowerPoint presentations. Long battery life would be great - but again not that important since I can always buy an extra battery or two. The catch - $1500 is the absolute upper limit on cost. Thanks!

IMHO if you want something that can withstand a little or sometimes a bit of abuse
in this price range i would suggest a used IBM 600x or T23. You would be able to pick either of those for well under your target price and I don't think you would be dissapointed with either on. T23 would probably be my top choice as it's simply a newer model than 600x.

Get a Panasonic Toughbook. No other notebook can touch them in terms of durabililty.

I have a Toughbook, I can vouch for what he says. Very durable.

? 1500 is plenty of money for an IBM without great graphics (which he doesnt need). He doesn't need to get such an old model. The current X series would probably the best for him. He doesnt seem to need the X40 (ultra low voltage cpu), so I recommend the X31.

Portability + good performance + under 1500 = good.

X31 @ $1399

X40 @ $1499

I would personally get the X31.

I agree with you, but the reason I suggested the 2 I did was because of the places he will using them I personally wouldn't want a brand new computer to bang up in the Field

If you can find a Panasonic Toughbook in your price range for what your describing I'd go w/ one of those. otherwise an IBM notebook of the T serries is prolly the way to go no where near as durable as a Panasonic Toughbook though. Hope this helps...
