Dirtiest PC that I have ever seen

It is an IBM desktop PC with a Pentium 2 in it (recognize the slot 1?). A fellow that I know that works in IT sent me this. The user complained that it would not start. Oddly enough, it was a short in the battery backup it was attached to and not the PC itself. The machine was able to start and was fine after a CHKDSK. He cleaned it out😉

The "dust" you see is wood fiber from a manufacturing line.

Wood dust is a strongly hygroscopic contaminant. Probably a good thing it was a slower pc with low FSB or it could've experienced silent corruption long before anything was caught.

That looks almost as bad as a Pentium-II era machine that I helped clean out that belonged to a smoker since it was new.

Yup, I worked at a place like this. When you've got a computer sitting right next to any sort of woodworking equipment, you're going to get some dust in there. Typically you try to clean them out whenever you do work on them, but some of them Just Work until you get to this point.

As someone else pointed out, the PII era machines seem to handle the abuse better than the newer stuff.

Now that's what I'm talking about! These are the computers that convinced me to stop using compressed air canisters and start using vacuum cleaners with hose and wand attachments. After using a vacuum cleaner on a few computers like this, it occurred to me, "MUCH FREAKIN BETTER! Why not use them for all computers?"

You know I would think a wood working shop has access to an air compressor or six. Seriously I even have one.

That's right kids, you have to wash behind your ears, you need to filter your air intakes, and you need to keep the filters clean. Just don't clean them too much or you'll make God cry.

yeah, because after 10 years of smoking around a computer, there would be a build up of 1-2 inches of tar 🙄

lol wow. I find it's gross when our PC support tech brings in PCs from the medical floor. The dust in those is not that bad, but the thought that there are probably about 10 different viruses sitting right in that PC, and even Norton can't protect you. 😛

I actually have seen something similar. The "content" was a nasty combination of smoke mixed with kitty hair. I told the owner to vacuum it.
