Direcway satellite modem question

my buddy just called and said his direcway satelite modem{just installed today}, gets 1/4 the speed of his 56k modem. but his upload speed is faster than my 56k modem. any ideas? how fast is direcway?

what do you mean 1/4 the speed..? and on the upload ..he upload thru the same link..the dish..?
