I downloaded DirectX 8.0 yesterday and now none of my sons games work. Error message--unable to find DDRAW.DLL file or DINPUT.DLL file. Tried re-installing DirectX, uninstalling and re-installing game and still nothing. HELP:(

Where did you Dl DirectX from? Was it a reputable source? Are you using the latest drivers for you video card? If all else fails you might like to search the forums for the DirectX 8 uninstall programme.

Some ppl say it works (not used it myself), others are not convinced. You can then install DirectX 7a again.

;)

Are you talking about basic DX 8.0 or the new reinstallation patch to DX 8.0a?

There are some games that require the preservation of "antiquity," and don't handle anything beyond DX 7.0a

Your big problem now is that you can't easily uninstall DX 8.

Contact the game maker and see if they have a patch available or in the works.

What is also important is what operating platform you are useing. Such as WindowsME, this comes with most current drivers and if you replace one of the drivers with an older version, well you get the picture. I have this file and have taken it from many sights, try on e of the game sights where I am sure you will find a link to it. I dont know if this is allowed but try MS game zone.

One of ME's good features is that it will not allow replacement of system files, especially DLL's, with older versions. There are many games that are notorious for screwing up a good OS by such file replacements. It is up to the damned game writers to write for the system . . . not the other way around.

Legacy games are a special PITA! :)
