DirectX not using newer driver in XP

When I run dxdiag in winxp and check the Display tab, it shows that it is using nv4_disp.dll from 28.32, but the miniVDD is nv4.sys from 12.40(the nvidia driver that came with xp), NOT the nv4_mini.sys from 28.32 that is supposed to be using.
Is there any way to correct this?

I have had this problem before. You need to get detonator destroyer from guru3d.com, or uninstall the current drivers thru add/remove programs. Reboot. When the wizard pops up, do not let it search automatically, specify the location of the driver.

The only problem is that since this is XP, the system file protection feature would bring the nv4.sys back whenever it is removed.

I removed "nv4" from the list of services with regedit, and installed the 29.42 drivers. Now in that directx tab I see nothing at all for the miniVDD. I'm not sure if that fixes anything though.
