Ever since I did the windows update and installed directx 9.0b I've had a few lock ups while watching movie files IE. avi/mpegs. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem or is it not even DirectX but instead the new Windows Media player 9?

I have DX9b, and WMP9 and have had no lockups. I would be looking at your video card.

I belive it's the combination of your hardware (as corky-g said, it could be your vid card) and directx 9. I don't recall what exactly the problem was, but directx 9 seems to have issues with certain hardware. I'd recomend reverting back to directx 8 for now. Since It doesn't seem like MS has fixed whatever issues that were/are causing this to happen on some computers. So all in all, it would be best to stay away from directx 9 for now.

I believe you can search the DX8.1 download on the MS site and run the update. It should ask if you want to go back to the earlier version.

I also think if you load DX8.1 from a game or software install disk (MB CDs usually have it) it will install over the 9.0.

You can check which version you are using by running "DXDIAG" using the "Start"/"Run" function. This will tell you if you are back to 8.1 after you try to change.

Cheers.

I had a GF2 Ti card with DX9 and it worked fine,I would suggest you reinstall latest video card drivers from Nvidia.com,even better run Driver Cleaner 1.9 before install of the video drivers.
