A way away. Like a long-ish way.
But since you have a 7800GTX, what the hell are you going to upgrade to?

Whats the point? Until Vista becomes available (sometime August-Dec of next year), there is no need for DX10 videocard. So even if you bought DX10 card today, if you are on the high end, you'll upgrade by then anyways.

I don't think you should. It will only be released with windows Vista which looks like around 2007 sometime, who knows. And you have to wait like 1 year, or one graphics card generation for it to start to appear in games. So you have a while.

Im pretty sure that we'll start seeing dx10 games sometime in mid 2007 which is a long, long time away.

I wouldnt get bent out of shape chasing DirectX around. And I darn sure wouldnt plan my hardware purchases around it either.

Half-Life 2 can run in DirectX 7, and it doesnt look too freakin bad!

This is the video forum... Most of us do think that HL2 with DX7 does look pretty bad.

They'll arrive around or slightly before Vista, if the rumors are correct.

end next year for ati atleast. nvidia might release a month or 2-3 earlyer i'd expect.

and it'll be a long time before you cant run new games with DX9 hardware anymore (save for battlefield 3 maybe 4. they did it to the geforce 4...)

I know a few people with older cards that they think it looks excelent. HL2 is one of the best looking (if not the best looking) in DX7 mode.
This is all relatively speaking.
