Well, any games coming out around the time Vista is released will need to be at least compatible with XP as well, so I imagine developers will do versions for DX9 and DX10. Most people are probably gonna wait a year or so before they move to Vista, so by that time I'm sure there will be a decent solution for playing most older games on it.

Wouldnt predict much difference from other DX releases. By the time it releases, hardware and software should be ready and in line to function properly mostly. Officially supporting DX9(-) and it still being utilized and around are two different things... Besides, they are supposedly going to release another XP iteration and various flavors of Vista. One of the Vistas is supposed to be a watered down graphical version to accomodate slower computers. Bound to find a good combination in all that to work with. It's not like Microsoft (in their moneymaking MO) is without enough sense to make the OS as widely compatible and accomodating as they can... Hopefully by then we have game compatible versions of Apple's OS on the x86 platforms to choose otherwise... :)

This is EXCACTLY why I don't want a 7800GT for christmas. I'm sticking with my 6600GT until vista comes out.

What a poorly written "article". I don't trust any source that sounds like it's written by a 13 year old.

Considering Beta 2 has not been released, I find that difficult to believe. Whatever CTP version you torrented is NOT Vista Beta 2.

This is why I purchased XP Pro 64bit Ed. DX will come out on that and any 64bit app will work as well. This will allow me to wait till all games are DX 10 cappable and I have a surefire DX10 card (G81 or G90).

could the G70 line be updated (hardware) and then sold as a new revision w/ hd X10 support, or is it doomed to be an obsolete card right after it comes out?

You sure about that?

From CNET.Com

"The second beta of Windows Vista will not come until next year, Microsoft said Tuesday.

The software maker did not give a time frame for the release of Beta 2 of the operating system, and said only that it would have more to say next year. Microsoft had not said when Beta 2 will come, but some had expected it might come in December or January. "

I wouldnt count on the G70 line being obsolete completely. You will find out that the card will still be a great card to own in a year or so... I dont know why everytime a new version of Windows comes out, everyone wants to panic. There really is never much to worry about. Same thing happened with Win95 and 32bit apps, Win98, Win2000, XP, and now Vista... Just relax people. Everything will work it's self out. Neither company would be happy to turn away valuable customers... By the time Vista releases, the G70 card series will have a lot of owners and that wont get overlooked...

I already read about this in Maximum PC (I think it was Max pc.. either that or Computer Gaming World). Older DX titles will play via that software emulation layer that was mentioned. I'm sure many of us used "glide wrappers" for old games a few years ago.. is it the same idea?

There will be a DX9.v or something that is DX9.c for Vista. Vistas driver model is apparently so different from WinXPs that DX10 will not work in WinXP or Win2k.

WinXP will be a viable gaming platform until a game comes out that requires DX10. Too be honest I think this limitation will hurt the adoption of DX10 more than it will help Vista's sales.
