Directv with A used DVR Tivo Question for all

I have a question that hopefully someone can help me with. I purchased a DirecTV Tivo receiver at a second hand shop, hoping to upgrade my 8 year account. When I tried to activate it under my name, customer service said the receiver could not be used. I was going to get a new card, and use this as a second receiver. I was told that the account associated with this particular Tivo box was not in good standing. Why as a bussiness
they just right it off and let me activate it ?

Is there anything I can do, or has anyone else had a similar situation? There is no way I can get in contact with the previous account holder, as this was at a second hand shop that would have accepted it as a donation, not a consignment.

Sounds like you got screwed. A new one is only $50 with a one-year commitment. I don't see how you could beat that deal?

This doesn't make sense. They should be more than happy to send you another card and bill you an extra $5/month. I would call back and talk to someone else and perhaps explain the situation better.

My brother had that happen... basically, if you buy DirecTV equipment off of someone that has an account not in good standing, the equipment will not be able to be used until the account is brought into good standing. It works that way with DISH, too, if I recall correctly, and I know that Nextel does that with their phones.

Doesn't make sense - the account info should be tied to the card, not the receiver, for this very reason.

Watch what you buy on E-bay people. If it's new you will be 2 year commitment when you add to your account. It has to be use and in good standing with Directv.

Same with Sprint.

I just checked DTV and I'll be damned that its a 2 year contract now. I bought one in '04 and it was a one-year contract.
