I also have VOIP.
I just called DTV and asked if Vonage would be an issue and they said it would work fine (doesn't mean it really will). Also told them I was looking at the cable company's DVR package and they said they would waive any install charges. Just pay $99 with a $99 instant rebate for equipment.

I'm thinking about it.

You only need a phone line for the activation. AFter that you can get rid of it.

Vonage works fine with both DTV and Dish receivers. Works JUST FINE. Dialtone on the pair of wires, so why do people think it matters?

Modem even works fine.

This is all FIRST HAND.

I've been a customer for only a year, no premium channels/ppv. I called the retention department and they offered me 6 months of Showtime free, 3 months of Encore, -$5/month for a year, no obligation. I was pleased considering I wasn't planning on leaving anyway. I bought the Center Ice package a couple of weeks later. I  my Center Ice.

Well, that's good it works I suppose, but I wouldn't plan on keeping a phone line connected whether it works or not. If it just needs it for initial setup...fine. If it really needs to be hooked up all the time...forget it.

Oh, and I figured it worked, but maybe the reason people get confused is because DIRECTV SAYS YOU NEED A LAND BASED PHONE LINE. I can't see where the confusion would arise.

They cannot give you deals on Center Ice or any of those packages. You should be able to get all the equipment you want. I'd call back again and make sure you get Boise Idaho.

Yes, the first time I was connected, and the second time I called the department direct from the number listed in this thread...

Also, I'm not interested in any premium packages...so I guess there really isn't much they can do for me. I would have done it if they would have waived either the $5/mo extra box fee, or the $5.99/mo fee for the DVR, but they said neither is possible. So, if that's the case, where does the $500 credit come in...I mean the best they offer is $5 less a month, for a total of $60 over a year.

It's not a instant rebate. You pay, then they send you the check is what they told me. The check takes 6-8 weeks.

Well, I think they may have lost a customer. I called and spoke with them. After much BLAH BLAH BLAH about how they want to keep me as a customer, the best they could offer was a free DVR..which is already a normal offer for current subscribers, and as for Center Ice...I could get a whopping $5/month off my bill...WOW A WHOLE $60!! All that $5 off does is offset the $5.99 extra month I would be paying for DVR. So basically, they offered me NOTHING. Also, they told me the DVR's NEED a phone line...so, since I'm VOIP..that's out the window.

Guess I'll just go back to cable and get my $300.

Just a reminder -- they will want to TAKE your DTV equipment as part of the deal. Not joking. They will take the dish off your house as well as all your receivers.

Fine with me. I'd probably just do the deal and get my $300, then wait until I can cancel and switch back to DTV and get all new equipment anyway.

Well, it looks like the R15 is a step backward from the R10 in a few features, so now I'm confused. Should I just get a R10 from them, or are there other options like boxes I can buy that will work with DTV, but have a better feature set? I've seen standalone Tivo boxes advertised on TV...are those any good?

Your best bet is to forget about the programming and take advantage of their 500 dollar credit and get some equipment. You'll be able to get a HDDVR from them or you can probably get a couple reg DVRs.. you just gotta pry them.

Well, one thing that confuses me is they offer the free DVR after rebate like it's a special deal to retain me, but anyone can can just go buy one and get the rebate. They did say they would put in a new triple LNB dish though. Is there a point to getting a HDDVR if I don't plan on going HD anytime soon? I wish they had a DVR box other than the R10, because it's fairly non-hackable...

Me too, except substitute Showtime for NFL Superfan pack for this season.

Still waiting for my Rebate though :|

How is the Superpack? I've wanted that but couldn't justify the cost. Do you watch the condensed games or the 6-games-on-one-screen-thingy?
