I called Directv today to get my billing reduced and evaluate switching to Comcast cable which has an introductory promo. My current DTV deal is $52 and includes basic+local+HBO. I quickly got transferred to retentions where I told them (1) I was considering switching to comcast who not only had cheaper tv but also $19.99 bundled cable modem; (2) was receiving dropouts and lost channels on my tuner box (true); and (3) was disgusted by the 35 minute wait to contact customer service (true). DTV offered to reduce my bill $15/mo. for 6 months. A $90 saving. ;)

Another poster listed the Directv retentions direct phone number as 800-824-9081. No waiting for 35 minutes to talk to someone!

Has anyone verified this? I don't wanna wait 35 mins to find out.

Thanks for the great deal (if true for everyone else).

They offered me a drop of $10 for 24 months! Free Tivo, new HD receiver, 2 free premiums for 12 months, and all that with no contract. Hell I didnt' even think I bartered all that hard either........... Still cancelled though, Comcast is giving HDDVR's for free for 12 months, on demand, HBO/Showtime, all the basics, for $29.99...........

Unfortunately DTV just isn't close, too bad I like DTV

All I say is check your bill CAREFULLY, I had many offers when I left my cable company to resign up for directv and they NEVER got it right yet, every month I need to call them and complain that the offers that were made to me were not on my bill correctly. Just be warned.

I got the same promo for switching from Satellite to cable (Newspaper ad -- 29.99 for every channel plus HBO and Showtime). When I called, they (Comcast) told me the $29.99 didn't include the DVR. That would be an extra $9.95/month. Just make sure you consider everything.

Comcast is no better with offers. I signed up for 18 months at $35 (Digital Serive ($28) w/ HD ($7) no DVR) and it took 3 months to get it all set up right. (It was thier Dish Buy Back Promo last year). They did credit me a few free pay-per-views and a month free. That was after three months of phone calls though (1-2 per month), oh well, no problem since. The analog channels are crappy in my area, but I got it for the HD sporting events. I have been waiting for 2 weeks now for them to come and replace the box (stopped working after a power outage) but I guess I could have just gone and swapped it at the local Comcast place.

Directv has to give away the store to retain all those subscribers whose contracts have expired. This one is hot!

Um, because Dish sucks? :p

I've always found the receivers flaky and the interface not very intuitive. DirecTV smokes it by leaps and bounds.

1. NFL has exclusive deal with DirecTV. Can't order it on Dish.

2. No Tivo receiver for Dish. You either have to use their half-assed attempt at a DVR or use a stand-alone Tivo and try to rig it up to communicate with the Dish receiver over IR signals with IR blaster that has to be reset every time it tries to tune a station that is unavailable.

BTW, for those of you wanting these retention deals, the direct line is 800-824-9081. Just mention the deal I got above, you should be able to get them to match it, good luck.

If you are a Total Choice Premier customer, you can get a $20 discount on that package for 6 months (total $120 savings) just by asking for it. The first CSR I spoke with couldn't do it, so I called again and got the deal (after mentioning that several friends and family members got the deal and asking them to check again).

I believe you have better chances if your contract is already expired OR close to expiring. If your with them for just 2 months they may deny you since you still have a long way to go, if you still insist you may be charged with a contract cancellation (i think $ 200-300).

Alwella - That's a pretty rich deal with Comcast. I called Comcast and, at least in my area, such a promotion was not available

I ended up going with Comcast Cable. What an improvement. The video on demand is a great feature that Directv does not have. Got to see HBO's Six Feet Under on my own schedule not HBO's.

Last year I called the DirecTV retention dept. and they gave me a $200 credit towards a new high def. receiver (my Hughes E86 was flaky). I was able to pick up the Hughes HTL-HD from a local Circuit City and it's been smooth sailing since then. Even during a nasty storm I rarely get drop outs. They also gave me $20 off my bill for 6 months since I had total choice premier. :)

Does anyone know how often you can hit up the customer retention dept before they call your bluff ? I got a free TIVO + upgraded dish & LNB + installation in a second room for my old reciever from them last year. I would really hate to have them call my bluff after I paid for NFL season ticket but before the season starts.

I do not see the down side of "calling your bluff". You just end up paying the list price that you would have had to pay if you had not asked for the discounts.

I got a call inviting me back from Directv. They offered same deal as before but wanted 1 year contract. I laughed and kept watching Comcast.
