DirecTV Installer: "Hey, I got this box that can get you all the channels"

So, after many a scheduling screwup, I finally get DirecTV over to the new house to do an install. After the installer finishes everything he tells me about a box he is willing to sell me for $400 that will get me all the channels (PPV, Movies channels, etc).

I couldn't help but chuckle. Nice side racket he's got going.

Tell him that he'll give you a box or you'll report him to DirecTV.

HD Spice is probably worth it! 😉

I'd be interested to hear how it can get all of the channels considering how DirecTV works, or seems to work.

You failed to mention if you paid for the box or not.

I know that there used to be a combination of various software and hardware that allowed you to hack the access card so that you could get all the channels even if you weren't a subscriber. It required alot of work though because DirecTV was constantly changing the codes which required you to find the new descrambler codes and update your access card constantly. Supposedly, that was pretty much squashed a year or so ago.

I've no idea what "box" this guy was talking about. I really couldn't find much via Google.

Unlocked access card plus no connection to phone line.

That's fine and dandy untill the next Tier wipe comes down. Dave agressively sends down ECM's that will loop your haxor'd box. You might get to enjoy your $400.00 investment for say 3 days to a week at best.

Don't bother with it unless you're card 'Testing' skills are elite in the extreme.

JR..

Yeah, if it's a DTV box, it will be down in no time flat as the tiers expire. But if it's a FTA box, then that's another story. But if he was selling a FTA IRD, you can get it for only $150-200 though.

Edit: NM, already stated..

Heh...I assumed the part where I said I chuckled at him and said he had a racket going would indicate that I didn't take him up on his offer. The price is too high for one. I haven't paid attention to the whole DTV descrambling scene for a couple of years (never tried it but was just reading up on it out of curiosity) but $400 is way too high. Plus I had no idea if the equipment he was using would be subject to getting "zapped" by DTV.

Also if it was FTA/Hacked it gets Dishnetwork programming, not DirecTV. I hear a lot of people have had success with the FTA hack.

Yeah $400 is a little much, makes you wonder how many people did make the investment and how much profit this guy and other DirectTV Tech's have made on them though.

You're offering me a bribe? What you
have just done is illegal, and in this
state if convicted, you could be fined
five-thousand dollars or spend six months
in a correctional facility.

Sorry, yeah, I forgot to point out, FTA doesn't do DTV DSS signals. Only DVB satellite (DishNet, BEV, etc.)

If what the installer was offering was just an unlocked access card, it wouldn't be susceptible to being "wiped", would it? As opposed to hardware emulation of the card, that is.

You should have wrote him a check (so that you can track that it was cashed).

Get the box, but don't do anything with it.

Call the installer up and say "are you going to come up and install this thing so that I can get all of the channels?" and if he says "No", say "okay, i'll just call DirectTV and try to get someone else to install it".

😛

its probably hacked canadian sat (bellvue) which is the canadian version of direcTV. you can reprogram the access card yourself if you get the cable when they change the codes. they always post the codes online. here in nyc, a lot of people have it.

If you want to get technical about it, I would probably say Bell ExpressVu is more a Canadian version of Dish Network than DTV, considering they use literally the same receivers & encryption technologies.

AFAIK, the only way to have hacked DTV is to get a cloned access card that someone, somewhere is actually paying for. This thing about a "box" for DTV would be news to me.
