I've looked on the website and read the contract agreements, but things are a little unclear.

Do they charge $20/month (months left on the contract) or $20/month + what I pay monthly ($79.99)?

We get about 600 channels and only watch 5 so I don't care for their service anymore.... want to go back to cable.

What I hate about DirecTV is that when I upgraded to HD they did not tell me on the phone that renews my contract for another 2 years. So now we're stuck w/ em... w/ one year left.

Also, I'm sure if I tell them I want to lower my plan from $79.99 to the basic $29.99 service - that will RENEW my contract for yet another 2 years. Ridiculous.

Any advice? Have you guys/gals canceled or wanted to cancel?

i inquired about cancelling my subscription, and was told it was $20/month left on the contract. nothing about the monthly fees added. i thankfully did not upgrade my plan to HD, so i'm gonna stick it out until september, then go back to cable as well.

good luck.

At least I'm not dealing with BALLY again, trying to get out of my 3 yr gym membership contract. Wow, that was hell.

They demolished the building next to my house, but told me I had to work out 17 miles away (as it was stated in my contract....) lol.

I'd see if they'd give you any of the deals they're running. I have DirecTV HD DVR service for $50/month. The cable company couldn't beat that. I really only watch about 10 channels though. I'm waiting for someone to pioneer individual channel options.

Never had DirecTV or tried to cancel.

Why would you go back to cable to watch 5 channels? What about just pulling in stations over the air and watch everything else online?

I assume that problem was solved as most normal people would solve it. With rampant arson and decapitations. Its the only thing those animals understand!

I'd rather watch channels in hi def on my 52" to be honest. Too bad cable won't let you pay $3 per channel you actually watch - I'd be all over that.

After losing my cool on everyone at my local Bally... I simply sent an email complaint to the VP and received an apology letter in the mail 7 days later. My service was canceled. I may have filed a BBB complaint too. Those always seem to work.

I've had DTV for 9 years, and they will not extend your contract if you change your service plan. You are free to do that at will, with no penalties.

Cancelling, on the other hand, will incur penalties if you haven't fulfilled your contract. Your best bet is to simply call and ask for RETENTIONS, explain to them what you want to do, and see what they have to say. Not only will they be able to tell you exactly what is needed to cancel, but they will try to keep you, and potentially give you an offer you can't refuse.

You won't save any money by switching to cable. and you could possibly get an even better deal through DTV if you haggle and threaten to cancel.

I talked to another customer service rep and he explained that it is only $20 per month left on your contract to cancel. No add. fees.

So that would be $220 in my case to finish out 11 months. He also stated that I can change my plan to the cheapest one - $29.99 and ride that out for 11 months which is $330.

Hmmm... what to do. I really want Spike and ESPN in HD and that's it aside from the local channels.
