Directv and Media center edition?

Im thinking about builing a media center pc just for fun but the question i have is how does windows media center control my directv receiver? The reason i ask is if you look at all the screenshots and reviews about MCE it shows the tv guide poping up via MCE on your tv (or pc) and it shows you selecting programs from there and it changes your channel.

I can understand how this would work with cable or antenna but how with a directv unit when you need that access card in order for it to work?

I know how to hook it up to the pc if i needed to (via the svideo out and audio jacks) but im just purely interested in how MCE can change my directv channels.

Im thinking that a remote will control both the MCE program list and my directv box at the same time with two signals coming out of the remote to change both of them. It would just appear that the MCE is actually controlling it but its not.

The ONLY reasons i want to do this is because i like the idea of playing my mp3s and movies from my computer (ripped from my own collection of course 😉 ), and would be nice to browse and check my email from my tv while watching tv. Other than that my directv receiver has tivo so i dont really care about the idea of having MCE to record or pause live tv.

Can anyone explain to me how MCE will be able to control my directv receiver as well? Plus do i need any special equipment to do this with? I was thinking about getting an NVTV card from evga but then i realized im not using cable and im not using antenna so whats the point unless i need it to send the signal back to the TV but i wouldnt be using it as a tuner i would be using it sort of like a pass through. I will be using a sound blaster audigy 2 zs for sound..and i will get some sort of video card with VIVO svideo on there as well.

I don't think it is possible to control DirecTV through MCE. Next year, I believe, DirecTV will be moving to MPEG4 compression. Meaning new equipment for everyone. Maybe if we ask really nicely, they will include a little bod you can buy that will let you put the access card in there and hook it up to your computer. Kind of like a media capture device, but it just has a card slot and a USB or Firewire cable coming out. Or maybe an actual bay you can put in your computer and connect via SATA.

Thats what i was thinking but i was reading some msdn blogs and people there are talking about hooking up their directv receiver to their mce computer but they dont go into any detail as to how to do it.

So there has to be a way to do it..i just dont see how it would work. Your idea would definatly be a great way to go about it thats for sure.

I believe you can control a digital cable box from MCE - the MCE remote comes with a couple of IR bugs for that purpose. I would think it would be easy to control a DirectTV box the same way, assuming that M$ was inclined to support the codes for a DirectTV box AND DirectTV allowed M$ to list it's channel listing in the Media Center Guide.

Do a search on Google.

i tried googling it before i posted here...however the only thing i could find was info about people asking sort of the same questions as me and others saying how great it works. Nowhere do i find the "how" it works..which is what i need :/

Why not just use a regular tv tuner card, then use an IR blaster and connect to the dish receiver to change the channel?

IR blaster is a good way to go, but it might not be the look you're going for, and I've read that it's "clunky". I'll be ordering the parts for my own htpc this week, and about 6 months ago I was looking for a way to contol my DirecTv receiver. The back of the receiver in my living has the telephone jack style data port, which you can supposedly use to control your receiver through your computer's serial port. The bookmarks I saved for this are on my work computer, but I just did a quick search for the info. I'll paste a bunch of links with various info for you. If I remember correctly, my original plan was to use a serial cable and the app at www.dtvcontrol.com, and hopefully combine this with Sage TV. Looking at one of the links I found tonight, I may have to switch my software choice to Snapstream/BeyondTV. These may not exactly help with MCE, but I don't see a problem running a 3rd party app for channel control (hopefully it's reliable - I haven't tried it yet). The 3rd link has a paragraph about MCE. Read the links and you'll see what I mean. Hope this helps!
