Thinking of switching to DirectTV from Comcrap. I can plug right into my TV on Comcast and get channels with the built in QAM tuner/digital tuner. Can you do the same with DirectTV? I am getting one of the HDDVRs but would like HIDEF downstairs on the other 40lcd and maybe one in the bedroom. So, would I need to get a HD receiver for each of the TVS? That starts adding up quickly.

You do need a receiver in order to view DTV. Here is what I would do. Call DirecTV tell them you are interested in signing up. Tell them you would like a price quote. When they tell you they are gonna charge you for the boxes (which one of them is free btw) tell them it is too expensive and that you changed your mind or haggle with them. They arn't gonna turn you away just because you don't want to pay for a HD box. I haggled them out of an extra HD box. I had to pay for the DVR box ($99.00) but the standard HD box was free.
 
thanks for the information, i just learned the HDDVR box requires two of the lines...crap, that means running and drilling lines...crap...cant ever be just easy.
 
Do you need to be able to watch more than one show at the same time? If not, then you could run a component video and some audio cables from the DVR to the TV downstairs. Then buy an additional RF remote online and set it to the frequency on your DVR. All of the outputs from the DVR are live at the same time, so you can connect it to more than one TV, but you can't watch two different things at once.

The only way currently to watch two different things on two different screens is with their DVR2PC program on a computer.

The DirecTV installer will run and install all the lines for you. You don't have to do a thing.

Any other tips to get discounts? I am about to switch to direct tv from cable.
