I've encountered that a few of the videos and whatnot that I've downloaded do not work on my new pc. It's a q6600, 4 gigs Kingston RAM, x1950xt, two 500gb Samsung HD's, Vista 64-bit Home Premium, and this mobo:
ASUS P5K LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Opening the videos on WMP plays the file with no sound. When I open the files using the newest version of the DivX player I get a message that reads this:
"You may need an additional audio decoder to play the soundtrack of this file.

This file contains a track in the Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192") format. You may need to install a DirectShow decoder for this audio format in order to hear the soundtrack of this file."

These files have played just fine on my old AMD 64 machine, which is running XP MCE. Does Vista not have DirectShow or something? Is there a codec I can download? I'm using the onboard sound for my Vista machine, and the onboard sound from the nForce 3 mobo in my xp mce machinel; really curious how to solve this issue.

Install AC3 Filter and you should be set. Why you're having issues is likely that on your MCE box you installed a DVD decoder package (since XP MCE doesn't include one by default) which would have come with a decoder for AC3. Vista comes with decoders, but for reasons unknown they only work inside of Vista MCE on MPEG2 files (I'd guess legality issues).

ViRGE's advice should work fine, but one thing to mention is that some players have built-in codecs that work (and in my opinion) work better than the AC3 Filter. I've used both the AC3 Filter and FFDShow's AC3 decoder and both require incredibly high GAIN values just to output sound that doesn't come out at a whisper. I usually remedy this by just enabling Media Player Classic's internal AC3 and AAC filters as they have no problem with the level of audio being off from the start. Really not a huge deal, but better than fiddling with settings!
