hello hello,
i have a couple issues that maybe some of you can help me out with.
ok, my current system specs are as followed:
xp2400
gigabyte G7AXP motherboard
40GB 7200rpm WD
60GB 7200rpm seagate
8x DVD rom
384MB DDR ram
radeon9700 Pro
400watt generic PSU
1. my cpu used to be an xp1700 with the same specs on everything else. before my machine ran fine with no problems until it started not shutting down. i would go to shutdown and it would go about it's business go through it but instead of powering off it would just reset and just boot right back up.
2. now, i just upgraded my cpu from an xp1700 to an xp2400 after which i formatted and started clean. i got everything installed and it still did the not shutting down thing. also i encountered a new problem. the computer won't run any games or anything in direct3d. i went to install 3dmark and when i went to actually run it, the screen would go black like it was loading, but stay that way for about 5-8 seconds then just reboot itself. i thought it was just a problem with 3dmark so i installed somethin simple like diablo2 and tried to run that, and it would start but then come out and give me a light blue screen and i can hear the windows errors popping up but couldn't see anything, then it would reboot. finally i just tried running dxdiag and when i tried the direct3d test it would go to 640x480 mode and hang there and then just reboot once again.
afterwards i tried running Prime95 to see if my cpu was bad, it did 3 tests on torture test and just stopped and gave me this:
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.4999995232, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.
so after that i decided to turn off the machine and pull power from one of my hdd's. i turned it back on with only 1 hdd plugged in and ran the same test, and it went up to 5 with no errors so i just stopped it. tried again with the drive in and got the same error.
right now i'm thinking it's just a bad PSU and if i replace it hopefully all will go away. i just ordered a raidmax 500watt PSU to try. does anybody else have any suggestions on what could be wrong with my direct3d? you think the cpu is dead and the PSU is fine and i'm just wasting my time and money on a new one? any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
thanks
