Direct X upgrade -- How?

I know it seems like a dumb question but I'm paranoid about compatibility issues etc... I know that there is a little bit of finesse required to *properly* install new video drivers like cleaning out the old driver residue, etc... Perhaps installing a new Direct X has some similar nuances to doing a "good job"? Right now I use DX6.1a and would like to upgrade to Direct x 7 (not 8).

Are there any "step by step" instructions that will help me do a "clean" installation of the new DX7?
 
Download the DX7a file, furn the .exe and it will overwrite your existing files. That is how it's done.
 
You really should upgrade to 8. Its faster (slightly) and supports the games that will be coming out next year. Why not install it now?
