Direct X sound problems

Help,

I have a Compaq with P166 W95. It has an original AMD Interwave sound "card" built in. I had IRQ conflict after installing a scanner which I was able to resolve amnually. The sound works but for my kids games which uses Direct X for sound, the sound becomes gargled when she played them. The intro sound etc, sounded fine. I reinstalled Direct X v5 then v7 without success. Any ideas would be appreciated.
