direct tv problem

I'm not sure of any of you guys know much about direct tv....but i always hafta ask my fellow at'ers whenever im stumped on something...

i have a samsung direct tv receiver and i took it over to my buddies house who has a sony direct tv receiver. I have league pass and we wanted to watch some games, but for some reason it didn't work...it is my understanding that if you have a signal and a working receiver with a valid card, it should work. I just paid for the league pass today and it was working fine from home....at his house, the receiver can't even load the normal channels and we live about 5 miles away from each other.....

does anyone know why it wouldn't?

no phone line....i was told that is only used to order stuff, and all we wanted to do was watch some bball games

it said....

installing guide.....or something like that and nothing happened....

yet there was an 87% signal

I think there's a menu where you go to replace current access card with a new one or something. Did you go to that menu?

hahaha.... you tested the card on your machine did u?... the trick is... once a card is written 😉, it can only be used on one machine. Class dismiss.

Why would he need to mess with that? He shouldn't.

no....i took my whole receiver box....i unplugged it from my house and took it over to my buddies.....thats why im saying it should theoretically work without any issues....i have the same box with the same card....the only thing is the signal....which works on his direct tv box but not with mine

I see, I misread your original post. 87 signal seems weak, when I had around 85-ish (before I got signal finder) only channel 100 & one or two other channels worked. But your getting some installation guide thing that comes up?

welll, you know when you power down (cold boot) your receivers and then it starts back up....theres that bar that goes through before it loads....it says downloading installation guide....that doesn't work at his place.....but his direct tv system does work....

You hard reset the reciever by unplugging it for more than 15 minutes. Hit the menu button and got to instalation and follow the instructions. Set up for your friends dish type and the other adjustments. You may need to leave it on channel 100 for a while to allow any stream updates to hit the card.(Direct TV) has stream updates fairly often particuarly at night. These are known as CMD82's.

2ndly if by chance you attempted to switch access cards between recivers you will have to call Direct TV. When you 1st start sevice the the access card is married to the receiver via each components serial#. In laymans terms your card will only work with your receiver. Switching out the card to a different reciever can cause the software on the card to loop itself (this is for theft protection).

the thing is....we dont knwo what dish type or anything like that is....we never took the card out of the receiver, well we did once but stuck it back in...just to make sure it was fitted properly.....

I have no idea what the heck we're doing....maybe i should look at his setup on his own card and try to figure out the dish type and stuff.....but aren't all the signals and dish type the same?

Siganl is the same for all direct tv systems. But the dish configuration can be different. ie. oval dish, or dish for multiple receivers.

I don't see how the LNB could affect this at all.

The *only* thing I can think of is bad signal, otherwise check to see if the card is seated and reboot.

I'ts back at home....it acquired data properly and it worked....so i'm gonna give it another shot at his place.....it just doesn't make any sense to me....
