direct connect problems w/ C&C zero hour

I am trying to play C&C zero hour through direct connect but having problems. We both have version 1.2 I have set myself in the DMZ on my cable router, my friend is using broadband aol. He can connect to my game but becomes nonresponsive quickly and gets dropped. if he hosts a game I cannot even connect. Any ideas?

I heard of some software that you can run that creates a suedo network between the PCs running it so you can just run a network game instead. I think it is either freeware or shareware, anyone know what it is called and/or where to get it?

Considering Westwood's netcode has never been all that great, I'd blame them.

ok what about the second half of my question... anyone have any ideas? I think it was a background app that networked all the computers that ran it. After everyone started up the network app then you started up whatever game that you wanted to play.
