Anyone have any experience with DirecPC? The reason I ask is because there "may" be DSL or cable in my area next year..then again pigs may fly too. I have heard it was good for downloads but had latency problems that made it useless for gaming?

you're correct. You get about 1Mb down, but still using your modem to upload files. That's the main reason for latency and poor gaming performance. If you main goal just to surf around and download files, DirecPC or any other service which uses DirecPC technology should be fine.

Most of gaming is dl as well no? As after all you have to send the actions of one player and receive the actions of however many...
?When we speak of latency because of the modem being used for upload this would be no more than normal modem latency right? I was thinking it might even be less as the only job the modem would then have is to send? If the latency is caused by the satellite interaction this is altogther different.

Does anyone know of any other quality provider(s) of satellite connection?

They actually penalize,or choke your d/l speed the more you use their service.Cute huh.In other words if you start racking up the kb;s in downloads,your thru put gets slower,like down to a dial up.

even with a 169 MB/hour or almost 3megs a minute vs. my 4-5per sec dls from a modem i.e. 240-300kper minute is still a pretty vast improvement.

I was told to expect 40-70k per second dls or 4.2Mb/minute maximum dls which means out of every hour I could be dlling 40 minutes of it?

Do either of you use DirecPC? It seems from the lack of resonse not many people do or have to. Use it for gaming?
