The Alchemy Live album is just... awesome. There's a 13-minute version of Telegraph Road, and it is SO much better than the studio version. Having said that, all of Dire Strait's music sounds better when it's played live. The studio mixes have a very flat feel to them, and their interaction with the audience is one of the reasons that I love their music so much.

Oh, and It Never Rains is great :thumbsup:

[Edit] I have the rather rare Alchemy video (VHS) if anyone's would be interested in a cap? Quality's not going to be fantastic, but the audio's intact and there's no frame jumping or picture shake.

Is that the DVD that was associated with the Greatest Hits CD? She sounds like a keeper. I actually have several caps of Dire Straits live performances, including Alchemy, On the Night, and the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday concert back in the late 80s (with Eric Clapton joining Dire Straits). They are a band that I liked when I first heard their studio albums, but LOVED when I heard their live albums.

This might be a long shot, but have any of you heard any of Dire Straits's B-sides? Stuff like A Fistful of Ice Cream or Eastbound Train or Making Movies, which was ditched from the album of the same name. I find it kinda depressing that Dire Straits only had 6 studio albums, and only a couple of albums from what I considered their heyday (early to mid 80s). When I hear all the stuff they didn't record, I just think of what could have been. Anyways, I wonder if anybody had a list of songs that Dire Straits didn't put on an album, but might have been played live or been on a B-side.
 
P.s. the guitarist whose style Mark 'copied', (I don't really like that word, lol), is Chet Atkins, a country guitarist. (Which shouldn't be that surprising since Mark was in a country band before Dire Straits - (Notting Hillbillies?(sp)). The closest I've got to Mark was when I was Marshalling at Mallory Park racing circuit here in Leicestershire in the paddock, and had to push his car back in after it broke down... Was thinking about seeing if I could meet him later, but never got the chance :-/ My dad 'almost' met him once too - he was doing a wild west show in Newcastle, and nipped in to the Holiday Inn for a drink afterwards in full cowboy gear, and after seeing Mark sitting at the bar, they walked straight passed him without 'noticing' - leaving him with his mouth hanging open 😉

Knopfler was in The Notting Hillbillies after he was in Dire Straits. It was kind of like his version of The Traveling Wilburys.

I wasn't overly impressed with the Shangri-La album; Boom Like That is good, and there's some other nice tracks, but as a whole, it was a bit of a "weird" departure from his Golden Heart album (which, BTW, was excellent).
