Hey guys I'm a college kid living at home, but still cook my own dinner. So give me some ideas on a reasonably quick dinner (up to an hour is fine) that is also pretty healthy and doesnt taste fecal 🙂
Thanks
Pasta is quick. Potatoes can be steamed (20 min.) or baked (1 hour oven; microwave much less) and accompany a main course which you put together while waiting for the potatoes. Rice is good (brown rice is better about 45 minutes to simmer on low and you make other things while waiting).
If you want to get a bit messy you can broil a steak or bake a chicken or fish. Learn to make an omelette - fast and easy.
Salads are really easy and healthy (watch the prepared dressings - oil and lemon juice or vinegar is simple) and accompany almost anything.
I'd suggest a good cookbook. (Better Homes and Gardens had a great book of easy meal suggestions prepared from scratch.)
EDIT: If you still live at home, why not ask your mom for help? Practice on the family meals. Great practice for entertaining guests later.
Ahhh i just live with my dad and he doesnt get home until late 🙂 Besides, no offense to my mom, but I like my cooking better hehe. I do like the idea of some broiled steak and baked chicken with rice though, I've had so much spaghetti lately....hehe
I taught my mom how to cook better. She is really good now (Grandma was THE cook).
Books help a lot. The problem is there is so much choice - that is why I suggested Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook(It is so practical). Recipies abound on the Internet.
It is really worth your time to learn how to prepare healthy meals. It is a real skill. Start with one dish, perfect it and expand from there.
If time is an issue, frozen vegetables are your friend. Stay away from canned food if you are interested in health.
EDIT: Pasta is so much more than spaghetti. There are pastas mixed with vegetables and Alfredo type sauces. I even made a spectacular original with crab and shrimp and black mushrooms that my friends couldn't stop eating.
There's a cool recipe on some Stove Top boxes. A few chicken breasts, sour cream, and cream of mushroom soup. Throw em all in a pan and cook it until the chicken is done. Comes out yummy.
I like some of the chili mixes at the store (the ones with multi packets of stuff -- Carol Shelby has his name on one, Shotgun Willy is another). And homemade meatloaf can't be beat.
Dammit, you guys suck! 😛😀 It's midnight here and I have this sudden urge to go cook something... 🙂 Guess I'll have to be content with a bag of chips and a coke for now.
When I was a cheapass back in school, I would make this dish and live off of the leftovers for a couple of days
1 box Chicken rice-a-roni
1.5 cups of noodle type pasta
1 cup chopped brocoli
1 shredded carrot
.5 cup corn
.5 cup french cut beans
seasonings of your choice
1. bring water to a boil (however much the rice-a-roni requires + .5 cup)
2. add seasonings
3. add ingredients
4. let cook at a low boil for 15 min
