hehehehehh...

Dealing with some software vendor issues right now, it really gets to be a pain - & I suppose I may have used just a little too wide a brush stroke there. ;)

I know there are some who really do see the clients "wants & needs" as their main point of focus, there are too many however who would rather tell you what you want & need and pretty much force you to buy it. (sometimes you really have no choice)

That little popup thing about the hidden icons doesn't stay there forever. I hide all my icons but 4, and I have no popup. I think you just have to click on it or hit the "x" a few times and it'll stop appearing.

I've been having problem with dimes for a while. A few weeks back, I realized DIMES wasn't starting at bootup (even though it was in the startup folder) so I reinstalled it. Now it can't seem to connect to any servers. I get this set of messages about once a minute:
12/29/05 8:48 PM dimes.measurements.Measurements execute
INFO: TRACEROUTE 165.12.163.241 UDP
12/29/05 8:48 PM dimes.measurements.Measurements execute
INFO: PING 213.166.99.49 UDP
12/29/05 8:48 PM dimes.measurements.Measurements execute
INFO: Destination host didn't reply.
Also, on the main screen, all I see is a lonely cactus with no comptuers connected to it. I dont' think its my firewall cause it worked fine before had to reinstall the firewall. I still get points though, which seems very strange. Anyone have an idea what is causing this?

That's what happened to me, which lead to my eventual un-installation of the DIMES client. I never had time to troubleshoot it, but I've read speculation that it may be related to a Java installation issue - though again I've not proven that or seen any real facts to back up the supposition.

Now things are looking up! Replaced my old router with a new, improved model (courtesy of Shuxclams). Now I get UDP throughput.
My DIMES screen actually shows good information now. That put two Dime'rs back on line.

I was getting the lonely cactus screen for a long time. Odd about still getting points because it didn't look like it was working. I'm assuming it all had to do with the improper handling of UDP by my old router since that is all I changed.

I had to update Java on all my machines to get Dimes running stable.
It was quitting for seemingly no reason, randomly before I did this.
Now I don't even notice it unless I am looking for it.

I haven't had any agents fail yet (except an old PC that got the "click of death" on the hard drive) but I have noticed some odd behavior. My main PC at home (the first one I installed it on) has only collected less than half as many points as a server at work that I put Dimes on two days later. Both computers are on 24/7 and the only real differences between the two besides OS (home is XP pro, server is Server 2003) is that the home PCs are on a 6m/384K connection and the server is on a 1.5M up/down DSL connection. Neither network is even remotely tapped out at any time of day so bandwidth isn't a concern.

I'm not really worried, but of course I'd like to get as many points as possible if there's a way to tweak things at home.

All clients are set to run new tests every 15 seconds.

There's a new client out for DIMES, 0.4.3. Its not on their download page yet, so in order to get it you have to go to the control center, log on, and then tell it to update each of your clients. A popup will then come up to ask you if you want to update, you click yes, and it updates. I think the trouble I've been having is as a result of them only using the UDP protocol becuase of a bug with ICMP (my firewall blocks UDP and I can't really figure out how to unblock it . The DIMES team said they'd start re-releasing ICMP scripts soon as people begin upgrading to the 0.4.3 client.

I have downloaded the new update (0.4.3). Does it seem to be any slower than the 0.4.2 version to anybody else? Probably just me.

Edit: Everything is back where it should be. I just had a low output day.

I have the delay between measurements at 15. Does the file transfer rate really matter what it is set at?

Add one new member. Should have it up on three boxes before all is said and done. Maybe a dumb question, but what are ASes and AS Links. Does that have anything to do with nodes and edges?

A little bump action, and I'd like to add my name to a growing list of individuals who are running this program IN ADDITION to F@H on my boxes (except, alas, my Win98 box) with absolutely no problem. If ever there was a project that was about rallying support and getting the word out rather than raw computer power, this is it! 12 short days until we get passed up, but I think this team has huge potential for increasing our daily output with only 40 active members as of now. So tell you friends and JOIN UP!

Totally agree :D

To any lurkers ;) ,remember this takes next to NO cpu power ,this DC uses a little internet bandwidth for its goals ,hence it can run alongside any DC project without any impact on it.

I'll be able to start doing work and getting points again once they start sending out ICMP scripts. :| They said it'd be soon ... but I'm not seeing them.

I am still not able to get udp to work on all but 2 of the 10 pc's I have running this, and I still seem to get enought points to be the 3-6 producer on the TeAm :D

Hi guys.
The bugfix of the ICMP protocol is ready. we are waiting for people to test it further and also for another agent feature ( the control center) to be ready.
Next version (0-4-3) will be available next week , first threw the auto update mechanism , and then for download.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

in the new version ICMP is bug free, and as a result in the near future, as people upgrade to 0.4.3 we'll start sending ICMP measurements requests
