Dell systems can't usually be overclocked. Their boards are generally based on the Intel reference boards, but with some minor changes to be more compatible / more cost effective with Dell's manufacturing equipment.

Gateway systems usually use rebadged Intel boards.

Well, IMO the DELL XPS isn't that bad if you aren't building your own PC and you do not OC. At least it got a decent looking case, and it's way cheaper than the seriously overpriced Alienware or Falcon or Voodoo...

check out fw if you are actually going to spend money on a xps. also buy it at the end of dell's quarter (this is when they have crazy promotions like 1000 off 2500 on desktops).

also if you are looking to burn money, go with a 30 inch apple lcd or 23 in inch hp/apple one.

thing about getting the apple 30" lcd is that you wont be able to game with new games on it. why? because for it to work on a pc, you'll need a $1000 2d card which absolutely blows for gaming.

Incorrect, actually! The card you need must support DVI DDL, and the most popular such card is the GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL, which can be found for about $500.

And even easier, if you plug the Apple 30" into a plain DVI graphics card (such as a regular 6800, or even a Radeon 9600) it will run pixel doubled... so you'll get a semi-native pixel doubled 1280x800 resolution instead of the native 2560x1600.

the GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL is ONLY available for the Mac you DO need a 1000$ Workstation card to run it on the PC, teh cheapest one that will do it is the Nvidia Quadro FX 3000, and it can be found for 800-1000$m the ATI wildcat XXXX is about teh same price and thoes 2 are the cheapest cards that will run it on the PCthe more expensive Quadro cards have the gameing performance of about the Nvidia Geforce 5800 or so

but that does not matter even the 6800 Ultra would have issues running games at 2560x1600

Well, I ended buying from Monarch and am pretty content. Already have Creative Audigy 2zs pci sound card and Apple 23 inch Cinema Display for my old eyes.

My system:

Lian-Li PC 6070B
Enermax 600w ATX EG701AX-VE-SF
Asus P5AD2-E Premium -really a nice motherboard
P4 3.6E overclocked to 3.96
OCZ OCZ26672048PFDC-K 1 gb 2 ea (667mhz)
WD SATA 250gb 2ea in Raid 0
Sony DW-D22A-B2 Dual Layer
Mitsumi 7in1 floppy
EVGA 6800GT 256mb PCI-E
Windows XP Prof
About $3050 shipped

Stable all day playing HL2 at 1600X1200 noAA, encoding of DVD movies into Divx codec for viewing on my Axim x50v pOCKET pc and MS Office use.

Did not want SLI at this point... Am a gamer, but not my first priority.

Nice system and possibly upgradeable to dual core cpus in new LGA socket format... We'll see. And yes, if I were a gamer primarily, I would have an AMD system. If I weren't already near retirement and fairly flush with cash I would have bought my own components and assembled it. But I don't want to so please put all those particular flames aside. I would give all my money away to be young again, but having more cash to spend on toys has been a nice benefit of aging.

Monarch service was the best yet in any of my purchases.
