Dimension XPS Gen4 pretty damn awesome

Alright, it is not an AMD system, but I believe the motherboard supports up to 1066 FSB. Not bad for a Dell system and 15% off right now. I may just buy the darn thing. Yes, I know AMD is faster inmany applications, but not in the multimedia apps I need. Can any one confirm if all the Gen4 systems come with 1066 FSB capability? I notice they are offered with up to P4 3.8 ghz or P4EE 3.46 ghz CPU. Only the 3.46 cpu requires 1066 FSB. Dell does not list the motherboard...

my man, u are a shame to the computer industry...*tsk tsk*

dell makes custom motherboards.

It uses the 925EX chipset, which supports 1066 FSB. Not sure what other processors might use it though.

It will support 1066 FSB although only the 3.46 EE supports it.

But before buying, look at Anand's review of the 1066 FSB. (Not that pretty)

Also, it would be much cheaper to build your own. (If you don't know how, MechBgon has a nice guide.)

rofl, not really. look at all the reviews and benchies comparing 800mhz and 1066mhz. the performance gain is VERY little, and was a waste of money for intel. but hey, you're right about how people like those big numbers. it will defintely improve sales.

Hey, if you're really that excited about a dell gaming system then by all means spend away, you'll deserve what you get.

Seriously though a Dell for gaming is oxymoronic.

when a vendor sells a gaming machine, the term "gaming machine" generally means a different case and an upgrade in video card. also, you'd have to spend a fortune for something so cheap. i've seen P4 xps's wtih a 3.2ghz cpu and an fx5200 and 512mb of ram for $1500. WTF!?!?!? most gamers build their own systems rather then wasting money on a hyped up dell 4600. you can save 30-50% on a gaming rig by building one yourself. building a pc is very simple. it's only hard if you have no idea what you are doing.

if your gonna spend that kind of money on a comp get one from Falcon NW or Voodoo PC

if the dude wants a dell, why is he posting and asking for our opinions? this is a forum. we can post whatever the hell we want, especially since the op created the topic. if the dude wants our opinion, let him get our opinion. like you said, it's his money. people are stupid to waste money when they can get more for less, not less for more.

I bought a GEN3 and it was the worst purchase of my life.
The thing is OBNOXIOUSLY loud, the fans are ANNOYING and can NOT be modified (unless you replace the 3 fans, and buy a fan controller (the fans plugs are propriatary (sp??)).
You can obviously not easily modify or overclock ANYTHING on it because its DELL.
I bought it during a LARGE rebate offer and after a week or so it was not worth it..even with almost half price in savings...build your own...no matter how much more it costs...
it also got VERY VERY VERY low benchmark scores....
consider this your warning..

lol just to tell you how idiotic Dell is, I'll tell you a story. I was at the mall the other day and saw this Dell stand out in the middle of the floor. The guy (of some eastern European descent) had a Gen4 XPS set up. Knowing that I would never purchase a Dell desktop, I decided to play dumb and ask him a few questions. I asked if the XPS came in an AMD 64 FX based system. This is his reply(in some Russian mafioso accent), "Why would you want to downgrade from a P4 Extreme Edition?" Then I say,"Excuse me, did you say "down" grade? Then he tries to change the subject by saying," You also can get 1.5 Terabyte of storage!" I go,"Who really needs that much for a gaming PC......"

Anyway, those were just some examples......stay away from Dell. If you want to buy it, go ahead. I'm just saying, don't waste your money.

You can get a pretty good dell refurb computer for cheaper than you could build, or at least I could anyways.

Well, I am NOT buying one though I thought it was an interesting upgrade to their last one. Even Alienware did not offer a 925XE motherboard. Not everyone wants to or even remotely has the skills to build their own pc. These companies like Dell exist because of that fact, so please ease up on the outrage at one of my early choices. To paraphrase a poster - "If he wants to buy a Dell (or whatever) let him". Anyhow, did more research and got a much better machine that I can overclock and has better upgrade path at Monarch Computers. BTW, I don't want to build my own system. I have in the past and now it is just a pain. $500 (gasp) difference in price to have someone build your system for you is just not a big deal to many people like me (read middle aged men at the peak of their income and nothing better to spend it on). I am one of those people who keeps these companies alive. Remember, I said this was not a gaming computer, but that I would game on it.

I think this Dell system is compatible with Alienwares Area 51 P4 system, but with a better motherboard and memory...

dont worry ToadkillerDog
just go ahead and buy it if u wanna.
but if i were in the place of you, i would have gone for the alienware system.
remember to post your experience.
🙂
