"Dim Screen"

HI
A friend of mine sent me the following message.

Son's gf had her laptop go dark. She can barely see the screen. Someone told her it is $1000 to fix that. Is it so? Do you know?

I don't have any other info now as I am waiting for her to get back to me about make, model, screen, etc on the laptop.

Any quick ideas aboout what could cause this?? I know this is vague, but it's a starting point for now.

Thanks

The backlight went out, but the LCD pixels are still changing color so she can barely make out some shapes. Either that or the backlight is severely overheating so the screen is quite dark, but the "barely" part makes me think that the light's out altogether. I had this happen repeatedly on an Inspiron 8100.

Here's another possibility: Check the power saving properties--The screen brightness may accidentally be set to extra dim to use less juice all the time. (This happened to my coworker.)

May need to increase the brightness on the screen (on my eMachines M6805 it's the Fn key + F8).

HI
Thanks for the help.
I passed the info along and it's up to them to go from there.

Thanks Again
