Dim..barely visible display on a laptop...is it the back light?

No its not FN + the brightness key. 🙂
My friend dropped it and now there is basically a black screen...if you look hard enough you can see the image is indeed there. An external monitor works fine.
I was thinking on buying the back light since the LCD looks in good shape.
What do you think?
 
It's either the back light or the inverter. However, depending on the notebook, and most of them are this way nowadays, you will have to replace the LCD panel itself as the back light is integrated. I don't think I've worked on a laptop in 5 years that had a separate back light.

If you are inclined to do so, pull the unit apart and reseat the video cable to the motherboard. Also check the connection to the LCD panel. I have seen a loose connection cause issues like this before.
