Digital video editing through Audigy firewire port?

I'm trying to set my dad up to do some digital video editing. He's got a Sony TRV900 digital camcorder (which uses Sony's firewire port), and he's soon getting an Audigy.

Does anyone know if any/all of the digital video editing software will work with the Audigy Firewire port? I've heard the Audigy's 1394 is slower than average, but the rest of his system will be pretty fast: AthlonXP 1800+, 512 MB PC2400, WD 100GB 7200 RPM disk.

He already owns an old copy of StudioDV (I think that's the one), which came with a firewire port, but which he was never able to get to work. Is there any chance this software (or a newer (upgrade?) version of it) will work with the Audigy's firewire port?

Last question: I'm not sure if the program he has is the best for what he wants to do, so I could use some recommendations...

He wants to basically be able to take some DV video footage from his camcorder, edit it on his PC (ie: cut and rearrange some parts, add effects and titles, and then save it back onto the camcorder's mini-DV tapes and also be able to create videos to play on the PC. (From another thread, I gather the best for this is to convert the video to mpeg-2?) He doesn't need hardcore serious capabilities, just that stuff I mention. He doesn't want to spend $200+ on elaborate software or hardware if he doesn't have to. Also, no analog video in/out capabilities are needed.

So, to sum up: can the system I describe handle this, and what software would do the job?

Thanks!

I don't have the Audigy myself, nor have I used one. But from what I gather from their website, what your Dad wants to do should be quite possible.

I have an Audigy and I know it is possible but I have yet to try it....i am sure someone on this forum has attempted it

Don't have Audigy but I use a PCI firewire card so port wise they should be the same.

I never had any problems w/ Ulead Video Studio (if that's what you meant) but never did like it all that much though. I use Adobe Premiere 6.0 and it seems to do the job but it's somewhat pricy. I've heard people liked DiviX encoders, Flask MPEG and other DVD ripping programs. I would suggest that you use separate HD other than boot drive for video editing/encoding though and scsi if possible.
