You don't have a right to TV, you had the buy the TV in the first place, sure it is no fun to spend $40 to continue to watch what you are already watching, but it was a first come first serve deal. You can still go get your own box by paying for it yourself.

Which commercial, and where on the website, did it say "limited coupons available". Who was told this, and how? Stop making things up.

Is the government guaranteeing coupons to all those who requested? I thought it was first come, first serve.

If they do want to extend coupons to everyone, why not just extend it to a rebate? Tell people purchase one of these qualifying models, mail in this form and the UPC, and we'll get you your $40 in 6-8 months.

No matter how long they wait, 100% of the people won't comply until they absolutely have to, probably after the conversion and they can't get anything on the TV.

The public safety thing IMO, is at best a push; battery-powered TVs are good for maybe a few hours; battery-powered radios are good for many times that (and there are self-powered radios that include weather alerts). If someone is running on a UPS, the converter boxes do not consume much power and wouldn't significantly reduce the TV time.

The rebate idea is probably the best choice, and it can be implemented at the POS, limit two, with the retailer submitting the claims ... reducing the chances of fraudulent rebate claims.

Regardless, I'm against pushing out the date; it's already been postponed (at least) once. This is another case of trying to reward the slackers and procrastinators.

So true. If us hot shot young organized egg heads don't have somebody to feel superior to the world will come to an end. Slackers and procrastinators should feel pain, lots and lots of pain. They should really suffer. It's a dog eat dog world and I get up really early. I keep my mind really sharp. I have my knife out all the time. Damn all those bastards who stop to smell the roses. Screw those people at the park having sex. God how I hate them. But hey, I got my coupons and my converter box so I know I'm better than them. Yeah, for me me me.

why is the government (tax payers) footing the bill for this in the first place?

they gonna give me a voucher for the yearly inspection of my furnace?

a voucher for the routine maintenance of my cars?

a voucher for all those bullshit light bulbs we have to switch to?

Soon, we are all going to be a bitch to Uncle Sam and by then it's too late.

An auction of those analog airwaves raised $19 billion for the government last year. Congress allocated $1.34 billion to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to distribute converter box coupons.

Right, by standing up and making the government fix its own damn messes, we are becoming Uncle Sam's bitch.

Put down the Gov't cheese and toad sammich and think about it for a second.

The change to digital TV will happen because there's no stopping it, just as with digital telephone systems. It makes far better use of available bandwidth and offers many other economic benefits, including increased tax revenues from broadcasters.

This voucher system is the easiest way to help those who can't afford a new TV to keep at least minimum TV service after the change to digital TV while implementing a system that (hopefully) will benefit everyone.

It should/could be at least a no loss situtation well worth the front end investment.

The goverment (tax payers) will net hundreds of billions of dollars on this conversion. This is simply a cost of sales. Research Government bandwidth auction if you aren't familiar with this issue.

Well the govt got $20 billion from the 700MHz auction, but I don't think they're auctioning off anymore large chunks of the old analog TV spectrum. My understanding is that the rest is going to be reserved for public and unlicensed used.

I hate to say it but...

I've never had a TV and somehow I'm still alive and well - and more informed than most TV-watchers, I might add.

I think if satellite, cable, and broadcasting stations went out for a month, one of two things would happen:

- People would find productive things to do and our economy would skyrocket
- People would riot in the streets and tear the country apart

Why is it that non-TV watchers are invariably so sanctimonious and narcissistic? It's a question for the ages which can only be answered by a truly wise mind - can bobsmith1492 rise to the challenge?

There is, actually. The spectrum is finite, and there is a hell of a lot of stuff we'd like to fill it with. Wasting bandwidth on analog transmissions is nonsensical.

For the same reasons that non-smokers, bikers, tree-huggers, MMGW cultists, and the rest: "They" are right, "You" are wrong, regardless of the junk science involved or other facts that are chosen to be ignored. "They" are not part of the Herd, "they" are special, and that gives thenm the right ro look down their collective noses and tell "you" how much superior "they" are than "you."

It's an old story, ignore it and "they" eventually soil themselves from lack of attention and "they" move along to bother someone else.

BTW: I don't watch much TV either. To each their own, I suppose (from each, according to the government).

Agreed and they need to get this "transition" over with, it is long overdue.

Obama Team Asks Congress to Postpone Digital TV Switch

The Dems are just freaked that they may lose their most important lying...I mean propaganda...machine. Gasp, without their TVs, people might just turn on their (talk) radios...or even worse, think for themselves!

Hm that's interesting. I didn't think of that.
That's because you're not as far gone as the OP if the OP was actually serious.

No I am that far gone. He just thought of it first.

I got a splash screen on a digital channel last night that said the station was going to quit broadcasting over "this analog channel" in several weeks.

Dunno what it's like in the rest of the US, but the stations in Fresno are pretty sad.

They need to keep with the timetable and just do it, They've been talking about it since the 80's.

Sigh :(

I don't think so. I am ridiculing a common obsession self-haters have, that because they do something right, like be self-reliant, they automatically become superior beings entitled to ridicule others. Such hypocrites aren't self reliant at all because they require the denigration of others to elevate their own estimation of their self esteem. I suggest that really self reliant people don't have this childish need and don't rush into threads making asses of themselves putting down others. And because they lack any self aware shame, I'm happy to supply some.

Spend much time reading self help books or on a shrink's couch Moonbeam?

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but this is fucking digital TV, we've put off the transition for decades, anyone that's not ready won't be getting ready anytime soon...
