Digital TV and Moniter NOT turning off with cable box.

I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4250HDC box hooked up via HDMI to my 24 inch computer moniter and it doesnt send a signal (I guess) to put the moniter in sleep mode. I thought perhaps this issue might have had to do with the fact that the moniter was designed for use primarly with video cards and not cable boxes. So I did a work around by dangerously rigging a 3 way adapter into a 1960s style two pronged nongrounded adapter and sticking that into the back of the cable box so it always turns off. Unfortunately Im starting to believe that a sudden power loss in moniters (what used to be an odd fashioned shut off) leads to premature death - as evidenced by the one Im having repaired (but again its just a theory).

Now my dad is having the same problem BUT he is using 50 inch Samsung plasma. He is using a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC and the TV doesnt turn off when you turn off the cable box.

We both have one thing in commom (besides blood), we are using the HDMI cable supplied by the cable company. Do you think the HDMI cable might be the culprit?

I've never heard of a cable box being able to put a monitor to sleep, and I've never heard of a TV that had a sleep mode in the first place.

Although our time warner box has a screensaver as of the latest update last week.

Get a universal remote (like a Harmony One) and program it so when you hit the power button, it shuts off all of your components.

This is typical.... shut the TV/monitor off yourself.

I dont want to do that. Im a lazy American who relies on automation. 🙂

Doesn't look like you have much choice.... they don't do that.

my tv has a no signal shut-off and sleep timer. i win 😛

Thats the whole point of this thread. For my some reason, no non remote controlled ex computer 24 inch moniter doesnt get a "no signal" reading from the cable box, so it just stays on all night, unless I physically push the button off (or use the rigged system as described in the OP). My dads TV doesnt get the signal either.

So I figure it has to be the Scientific Atlanta boxes or the HDMI cables that are not saying "no signal" to the tv and moniter so they can go into sleep mode.

Just an fyi, the monitor shuts off after a "lack" of a signal, not a "sleep' signal.

SO your cable boxs is still sending a signal while its off.

On the Scientific Atlanta cable boxes, do the following:

1): Plug the TV or Monitor into the Switched outlet on the back of the cable box.
Be sure it is within the rated wattage of the outlet, if not you need a relay box
which would plug into the cable box and a power outlet. Cable box controls relay, relay the high wattage set.

2): On the SA cable box remote, press Settings, More Settngs, scroll until you see "SET: A-C Outlet"
You will have 2 choices: Always ON .. or ON with Setop (it will only be ON when you turn ON the Cable box)
That is the option you want. Now when you turn off the cable box, the tv will power off as well.
