Why bother with an SLR if you're using full auto?
The lens that comes with the Rebel is mediocre, at best. A new lens should immediately be purchased if you get a Rebel.

Because I want to get better at shooting and I used to shoot a firm SLR and I loved doing it myself 😀. I just had a view minutes and was checking them out.
So if you used to shoot a manual film SLR, why are you using auto? Are you saying you just used the auto setting to check the camera out?
If you're into photography you wouldn't bother with the auto setting when trying out the camera.

Don't even bother with the kit, just get the body and a decent lens.

You don't think there is ever a circumstance where auto is useable?
I have a crazy shot off the Empire state building where I took my camera and stuck it off the edge looking down to the point I couldn't really even see the screen. I used Auto for that.

i didnt mean you have to use autofocus all the time, but you definitely are going to use it a lot for travel/street stuff and even other things that would be ok with manual on a bigger viewfinder.

af is so good these days that i look at it as the default setting on my camera as far as focus goes.

The "kit" lens on the Rebel isn't the fastest or the sharpest lens in the shed.

But it's lightweight and fairly wide, so it's worth the $80 or so premium you pay for it.
You know, that's what I used to say about the kit lens on the A100 before I picked up the 28-75 f/2.8. I haven't used the kit lens since then.

I have the Canon Rebel XTI and its awesome. The standard lens that comes with it sucks...I bought a Canon EF 28mm-135mm leans and a 28-300 mm lens and both have the ISM feature. No complaints so far.
