Anybody know who the OEM is?

Edit: the general consensus over at FW is that this is probably a BTC drive.

Just an FYI - picked this up at Best Buy this morning, although the box is marked 48x16x48 the actual drive is a 52x24x52!

Just a heads up for those interested in buying this... I searched the AT forums and found this

This thread's about Digital Research, in general, and it doesn't sound too good.
Although it's cheap, I don't think it's worth the hassle. The quality of drive/MIR definitely doesn't seem to be acceptable.

Was hoping to make this deal even hotter with some pricematching action, but it's almost impossible (for me, anyway) to find any other vendors online selling this drive---checked pricescan, pricewatch, mysimon, pricegrabber, amazon, staples, etc---I assume it's Bestbuy's "house brand."

CONFIRMED!!!!!!! I got one today as well. It is a 52x24x52 drive! They put a letter with a bunch of crap saying that we're valued customers and junk, probably some problem with the 48x12x48 drives they were selling earlier, but great deal!!! Another thing, the Best Buy's didn't have lots of people getting these so you may not have ot rush out to get one.

Yup, and because it's a LiteOn it can be flashed into a 52... my bro bought a PacDigital from them for $40 no rebate...
easy way to tell is to identify the burn protection feature they use. If it says SmartBurn, it's LiteOn and the 52 has Mt Rainer support.

Yeah, that rebate is the suxor though if it's from Digital Research. But if the MIR is from BB, then you should be OK. $20 is still pretty good for a drive... heck, cheaper than getting a normal CD drive :p

not anymore, they used to be, but unless it says SMARTBURN TECHNOLOGY then it is not a liteon.

No need to rush. The rebates expire then but you have 30 days from date of purchase to postmark the $10 one and until 4/22 to postmark the $30 one. These are the online rebates - don't know if the in-store ones say the same.

Digital Research rebates are really hard to get. I bought 100-pk Digital Research CD-R from Best Buy last July, and I am still awaiting my check :|

I don't really need one of these drives, but it's tempting......especially since I still haven't used my $10 digital coupon I got for buying the Army of Darkness Boomstick Edition dvd, which would effectively give me this drive for about $4.10 (sales tax). ;)

As far as rebates go, I always make certain to make a photocopy of the paperwork before it goes in the envelope! Of course, with only the $10 rebate going to digital research, that's not a HUGE loss if it doesn't come, right? :)

Directly from BB's listing:

48x maximum write speed
16x maximum rewrite speed
48x maximum CD-ROM read speed
2MB cache buffer
80 ms average seek time
EIDE interface
SMART-BURN technology avoids buffer underrun errors
SMART-X feature analyzes disc quality and adjusts speed to the fastest possible
Includes 1 blank CD-R disc and CD mastering software

Looks like it's a Lite-On!! :)

I thought lite on only made a 48x12 and a 48x24?

Just got back from BB. I was lucky and got the 52x24x52. My friend got the 48x16x48. He exchanged it for another one, and same thing.
So I guess it's just luck of the draw for the "faster" drives.

Can't tell if it's Lite-On. What gives it away? The box doesn't give the same kind of description as online. ie SMART-BURN

Well I got one and opened it and it is a IO/Magic. Can't win them all. Hope I get the rebates. I actually am using a Lite-On and bought this as a spare figuring for $10 how can I go wrong. I do a lot of burning and a lot of trading so I like to have a spare just in case. I own an IO/Magic floppy drive and have had no problems, but it doesn't get a whole lot of use. This is definitely YMMV.

I've picked up a couple of these: if you get lucky and get the 52x24x52x one, it's an Acer/BenQ 5424P. If you get the 48x16x48x version, you'll most likely get an I/O Magic, which is "Optorite". I've had a couple of Optorite's before and have had nothing but good things to say about them.... YMMV. For $10, it's a good deal either way. Incidentally, the Digital Research rebate is only $10, the remaining $30 rebate is directly from Best Buy, so you won't get screwed on that one..
