No it is a BTC. You do better getting the Lite-On at Newegg. I think they even have the 24X burner for $80 or so.
And BTC from what I have heard is not good. Yes the price is cheap, but so is the Burner.

Isn't this the same drive that was $30 on Black Friday from BB?? If if is, it is a Lite-On. My bro got one, and it even comes with a full version of Nero 5.5.

Funny, Nero 5.5 is on sale for around $50 after a rebate.

Marlin1975, how do you know that it is a BTC?

Schlief, how do you know that it is a Lite-on? Does the drive have a product label that has the Lite-on logo and serial on it?

Thanks both for the reply.

Mine was an IOmagic, obviously it varies since we have at least 3 different manufacturers of the drives listed already.

I got one of these drives at the black friday sale. The one I got is a Lite-on. However, some other people who also bought the drive at the black friday sale reported that they got BTC drives. So, you might get either one. My guess is that digital research gets the drives from both manufacturers and repackages them and sells them as simply being a 16x10x40 CDRW drive with no guarantee as to who they will be manufactured by. So, which you get will likely depend on which brand they used in the particular batch of drives that the place you bought it from just happened to recieve.

As for IO magic, I believe I heard somewhere that they bought out digital research and now own their brand name. Anyway, with the drive I got the warranty registration card had IOmagics name and address on it. So, I would suspect that digital research is indeed now owned by or at least somehow affiliated with IO magic. Anyway, IO magic is alot like Digital research in that they sell repackaged products made by other manufacturers.

lite-on 16x
but it may not be the same one
anyway. i agree with mr. stefan
i got a hi-val 16x as a replacement during om's sale, and it was btc (my boss bought it for his son)
all three are iomagic, which goes to reaffirm the idea that nice guys finish last (dr was a bit respected from what i gather)

"I searched for top-g on google and all I get are sites about g spots."
dude, rofl!!!
but anyway, i will say this (as carefully as possible :) i don't want no timeout:( ) doesn't the drive have nti on the box in the lower-left corner? the ones with nero shouldn't be labeled as such
and you could always chew their behinds out for having the box with nero advertised on the back...

No mention of the brand of software on the box.

I feel like Ned Beatty in the Deliverance :disgust:

Its a Christmas present for my brother.

I can hear it now "Top-G ! You really went all out!"

Be Careful, you opened it and want to return it to Best Buy, they may reject you thinking you switch the drive. The name on box doesn't match the writer ;) Best Buy needs to educate their employees. My friend got rejected!!!

I thought the NTI software was supposed to be pretty good. I do know it was one of the few that initially worked with Windows XP with no problems or patches.

All, went to BB Sunday afternoon and was surprised to see that instead of selling out of these drives they actually had a nearly full shelf of them. I picked one up for $79.99 - $30 rebate. I have not opened the unit because of the debate in this thread. What is the overall concensus on this drive? Is it worth the $$$ or not. Has anyone run a CDRinfo program on the drive to determine all the particulars on it?

Geez. I was lookin for a CDRW drive for my pops, and I just kept skipping over this one. Not sure why. Either way, ~$60 for a 16x CDRW after MIR ain't bad.
Thanks!
