Digital Rebel - Lens Suggestions

So I have the kit 18-55mm lens and I bought the EF 100mm-300mm USM lens, but I am looking to pick up another lens to "round out" the package.

Maybe a macro lens, or a 50mm or an 18-50mm with a better f-stop than the kit lens.

Anyone got any suggestions?

What do you shoot. This is the most important thing to factor in. Also, do you find that you want a faster lens, or a differenet focal length, or macro? If you find yourself shooting landscapes, macro is a waste of money. Trying to "round out" your camera bag is a HUGE waste of money. Buy what you will use, then get something else if you find you will use that.

What do you shoot, and what focal length do you shoot at most/want to but don't have the glass? Do you "need" a fast lens?

Example: I'm finding that I am shooting more low light / no flash stuff, in close (such that I'm at the end of my 24-85 which is f/4.5 at that point). The best lens for me would be an 85mm f/1.4, as even the f/2.8 tele-zoom that I borrowed, or my 90mm f/2.8 macro, are too slow (ok, it's a Nikkor, but the same applies to Canon).

You need to tell us what you photograph before we can recommend a lens, and if you're not sure what you want to specialize in yet, give it some time and save your money to buy a better lens when you do get around to figuring out what you need to continue in the direction that you will have decided to take.

DR high-ISO is better than D1 high-ISO by a small margin, to say the least.

Given said better high-sensitivity performance, a f/2.8 lens is fine, but whether you want this in the form of a zoom (for the kids) or a macro lens (like the 100mm f/2.8 USM macro) would depend on which you plan to do more of. The latter can have a certain amount of usefulness for shooting kids, if you're willing to use foot-zoom, but the former won't do much good if you want to shoot a frame-filling shot of a coin-sized object.

17-40L F/4. If you can splurge, get the 24-70 f/2.8 or a used 28-70 f/2.8.

If getting the 24-70, make sure your copy is sharp! It's notorious for being either really good or really bad.

Indoor shots without flash?? GET THE 50mm F1.8 MKII NOW!! It will be the best $75 you EVER spend.
