digital music recorder?

I need something that can record music at reasonably good quality and then transfer it to a PC. Most small MP3 players and digital cameras have voice recording capability but the quality is poor. I'm looking for one that can use an external mic or preferably one with a high quality built in mic capable of recording at a higher bit rate for better quality.

Does anybody have any experience with this and any recomendations?

Minidisc (Hi-MD) can do this very simply because recorders have preamps in them. Generally hard disc players don't have preamps so you will need to use line in and an external microphone preamp. There are one or two exceptions but they are not inexpensive.(e.g. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack2496-main.html )
I don't know how good most line ins are but that is a relatively minor question compared to choosing the right microphone.

I use a Nomad Jukebox 3 with an external preamp/adc and a big microphone so it's rather bulky in all.
