Digital media problems in Windows XP

I have someone with digital media problems. Videos will no longer play in Windows Media Player at all. I tried reinstalling WMP with different versions, but no look. Some videos can be played in VLC Media Player, but none in Windows Media Player. Also, .mp3 files will not play at all, nor will the .wma files. Does anyone have any ideas? Some possible causes...the large amounts of pornography this person watches on the computer. No, it's not me, but if you want to poke fun, so be it. Just try to provide a useful answer as well.

Thanks for any help.
