Digital Foundry: next-gen PlayStation and Xbox to use AMD's 8-core CPU and Radeon HD

The Xbox360 for example was a tricore with HT clocked at 3.2Ghz in 2005. (Back then we had X2 and P4D.)

Xbox720 (if this is right) will be an 8 core low performing 1.6Ghz chip in 2014/2015. A product that is awfully slow even by last years standards.

do you really think the 360 CPUs is superior to the 2005/2006 PC CPUs?
compare that thing to a Core 2 Duo...

Seems like AMD has secured a stable source of income for the coming decade, should this article be correct.
This is very good news for PC gamers, since the consoles will be much closer to desktop PC architecture, allowing better game ports.

PS - Also, multithreading! 😀

No .. see, it says so in my sig !!

doesn't sound that bad actually, cpu's give a very diminishing returns compared to a gpu...

a beefy cpu would allow what? a better physics and AI... not really good against a soon-to-be-standad 4K resolution

Try downclock your CPU to 1.6Ghz or perhaps even less to match a 1.6Ghz jaguar. Take it for a spin and let me know if you prefer more power or not.

And 4K soon to be standard? That might not even happen in the life of xbox720/PS4.

It would seem odd to report a baseclock that is non-turboed. That would be like AMD and Intel releasing a press report about their chips, and they only reference the idle clock speed. Seems silly to say, "The 8150 runs at 1.4Ghz!"*

I get 8 cores...that makes sense to me because, as others said, the next consoles will be more like STBs than we have seen before. However, I don't get why the clockspeeds would be so low. That is almost suggesting that any game on the Xbox or PS3 that pushes some kind of logic or algorithm very hard (that isn't related to graphics, pure CPU processing, like AI) may not even run without choking

I assume you have nothing good to say about AMD? Regardless of your banter, this is a good deal for AMD and should help improve PC gaming as well.

Take a CPU heavy game, like WOW or SC2, and watch what happens when you try to pair a 7990 or GTX690 with an atom.

It's based off of a jaguar core and not BD.

His problem besides his obvious biased elitism towards AMD is that he thinks in hardcore pc gaming enthusiast terms, a world where Intel rules everything even graphics and Core i7 desktop cpus define reality. I think this is a great strategical win for Intel and a huge opportunity for its future socs if it decides to move in, my personal opinion is that it will leave the consoles to AMD.

Wtf dude its like your reasoning skills jumps ship on these subjects(how much intel stock do you own?)... yea cause next gen consoles will run windows and all games be native directx .. No? Not friggin comparable then is it.

But it's ok .. it will never happen .. check my sig 😉.

Xbox360 uses a DirectX variant.

And windows or not doesnt matter. Besides memory, windows add a tiny insignificant overhead CPU wise.

Not so.
From the rockstar himself ;

http://www.computerandvideogames.co...d-that-pc-is-10-times-as-powerful-as-ps3-360/

"It is extremely frustrating knowing that the hardware we've got on the PC is often ten times as powerful as the consoles but it has honestly been a struggle in many cases to get the game running at 60 frames per second on the PC like it does on a 360," said Carmack.

edit : also, why this is of the upmost importance : http://xkcd.com/386/

To be fair, the console resolution is almost always 720p but desktop's rarely run at such an incredibly low resolution.

There is nothing fair or unfair about it, if the target resolution for consoles is lesser that that for a PC, then consoles can get away with lesser perf, simple as that, no + no - there.

No it makes a difference in this case because that means getting 60fps has little to do with overhead which was the entire point (you even quoted that).

If you switch resolution down to 720p, it'll run at 60fps easily on the desktops running Windows with 10x the graphical power easily too.

WOW and SC2 in a console.... really?

my dad is using a celeron 420 right now, single core and 1.6ghz...and it runs half life 1 just fine... 😀

i know, i know...old game...but this 8-core ship is like 9-10 time faster than my dad's computer, and i really think that with a decent gpu it can run HL2 (just igp at the moment)

9-10 times faster?

More like 6x with near perfect scaling. Just compare the dualcore Brazos with the singlecore Celeron 420. But getting near perfect scaling and gaming. Thats gonna be more than tricky.
