My P4 has reached the end of it's usefulness so I'm looking to build a dual quad system that will be used for:
video editing, high end digital capture, direct to disk video capture, video transcoding using the following programs:
Premiere pro cs4
onlocation cs4
media encoder cs4
photoshop cs4
maya
capture one pro V.5.1 - high end digital capture software for phase one digital backs. Used on commercial photo shoots in NYC.
OS will probably be Win7 64 bit

price is not an object, just need a system that is blazing fast and stable. no overclocking unless it will save $$.
been looking at Tyan s7025 MB's, Intel 5500 cpu's, and ATI FireGL or Nvidia Quadra cards.
Drives will be a mix of Seagate SCSI U320 raids and SSD's
Will also need 1394B connectivity
Current monitors are EIZO cg220's (2) 1900x1200

Any suggestions on this monster build?
Budget is under $8000.00 U.S.

Time to build 30-45 days.

thanks for any helpful advice.

Not really familiar with dual socket systems. However I would recommend waiting till March for the new Fermi architecture work station cards from nVidia. It's a pretty big leap forward for the architecture and performance.

I can let you know that a dual quad server(which is a little more expeisive) run about 7k without OS and without any sort of video card. I would be willing to bet that with a few SSD's and a SCSI RAID setup and a decent video card would run well over $8000.

You are crazy with those prices. You can spec one out at Dell for MUCH less than $2k if you watch the outlet. $3k for a good new set up.

a dual quad xeon server maxed out for 3k?! you're on drugs. you might be able to get in the door with 3k, if you don't need any RAM. On top of that you're looking at ~1000 for the workstation card he's wanting. scsi controllers/hdd's aren't cheap, neither are SSDs... Add in another 2-3k just for storage.

Thats about what I would suggest or soemthing similar. I guess 7k was a little steep but it's what I'm used to. Just keep in mind that that isn't including a SSD and if you're doing image processing you may need more HDD and that's also without the GPU...

I can build a dual E5504, 24gb memory, supermicro server for $2300, brand new...with 4x1TB HDD's.

i wish I was in the OP's shoes for a personal PC, hehe.

If you need a dual CPU 1366 motherboard, let me know..I do have a spare :)
