Digital Cameras...

Since Christmas is coming up, I am thinking about getting a digital camera.

At first, I realized that camera phones have just that, around 2MP, and my current phone is crap anyway(have a Cingular, btw), so that's what I think I want.

I am very tight with money, so I wouldn't want to spend on anything over 3 MP, unless pictures will just look god awful.

If you guys have any suggestions, either camera phone or camera that will be good enough for desktop wallpapers, pictures to save on my computer, and pictures to post for you guys, please let me know.

Thanks!

canon S2 IS, and i know Insane3D will support me on that one. ;)

it's a P&S (which i am guessing you want) with advanced features as well.

Well, I might get my parents to get one for me, but I wouldn't want them to spend much.

I am leaning towards a camera phone, because I'd like to be able to take a picture anywhere, but I want the pics to be quality enough to post online.

60-100?

I might just check out the Cingular site, I might be able to get one cheaper since my plan is like new one every 1 or 2 years because of warranty, not sure though.

thanks in advance

the S2 IS is more like $400... so definitely out of your price range :(

a camera phone is not really powerful though. i don't recommend it. maybe get an older canon powershot model. they should be relatively cheap now.

Kind of what I was looking for. I am guessing 2 or 3MP is good enough for me, I will probably get a much better one a year or two later on.

Hate to bother, but where would you buy one? Wal Mart? Amazon?

I like the pics on Pixelopera, awesome looking shots.

The July 2005 issue of Consumer Reports rated digital cameras. The cheapest one reviewed was the $90 Kodak CX7300. If you can wait a month, I would look for some Black Friday deals. That's the day after Thanksgiving.

Other cheap cameras CR reviewed: HP photosmart M307, $150; Olympus D-540, $150; Fujifilm FinePix A330, $140.
The number 1 camera was the Canon Powershot A510 for $200. Sometimes Dell has the A520 for less than $200.

Get that....but if you can't afford it, the S2 IS is a good camera. I really don't think that 2MP is good enough for anything. If you ever want to make prints of something you are going to want at least 3-4MP for 4x6.

I personally don't see the point of the camera phones....they look horrid and grainy and ugggh...but me...I'm a photographer so I might be biased towards my DSLR :p

thanks larry... those were taken with a nikon d70 which i got for $899 AR. i saved up a lot for it.

OdiN, his price range is not near what you recommend (that's an outrageous price for a camera anyway, and i'd go nikon SLR) ;) 2mp is not horrible but it's not great either... this was taken with my 2.1mp camera which i have since given to my mother. it's definitely not as clear as my other cameras.

amazon.com is a good place to go. you can check for coupons at your favorite hot deal site and see if it can be applied to your purchases. gottadeal.com may have something nice for sale elsewhere as well. free shipping and no tax is always a plus :)

Well I have a Sony Ericson k750 camera phone and the pictures aren;t too bad. If all you want is something that takes very simple pictures to post online and not really print then it does a good job. If not a i second the idea of an S2 that or i'm about to sell my s1 IS so PM me if u want to know more (i live in england but it'll probably be up on ebay tomorrow...)
The s1is can take some pretty damn good pictures and i'm sure the s2 will take even better ones!

Good luck

A520 from Dell...been as low as $140. Wait til it goes that low again and buy. Best camera, by far, for that kind of money.

Oh and as to camera phones they definatly do have their place. I have a >$1000 DSLR and also a camera phone. The problem with the DSLR is that you can't take it everywhere with you. The phone is really great for those spur of the moment shots that you wouldn't otherwise capture. With decent light the quality of the k750i isn't that bad either!

What?? You'd get a NOINK?? :p

I have dirtied my hands using a D70 that a guy walked up to me and asked how to use when I was at Death Valley shooting with my 20D....it is a good camera...for a Nikon ;)

I WAS just kidding about the 1DsMkII...though I would love one. Been eyeing the 5D lately.

nikon SLR > canon SLR

canon P&S > nikon P&S

it's fair game if you have an open mind :)

I've used both Nikon and Canon....I really do like Canon's better right now. Nikon isn't positioned right in the market at this time. They don't have anything that really competes with the 20D and nothing at all with the 5D. I really hope they release a full frame camera cheaper than the 5D with similar features...if only to force Canon to lower the price.

And...to the guy who said Canon Glass > Nikon Glass....mostly I'd agree but there are some very nice Nikon lenses out there.
