digital cameras moving to SD and away from CF?

I haven't been shopping too hard, but whenever I look at a digital camera on sale, it's ways a SD memory type. Personally I'd rather go with CF because I already have a bunch of cards.

Has anyone else noticed this trend, or is it just me? Maybe I'm not looking hard enough...

I think you are right.

Not only are cameras going this route but also Pocket PCs and PDAs.

Very annoying when you already have a bunch of the CF media or you see the difference in price between SD and CF media.

Even if you don't have any CF cards...the SD one's (right now) are more expensive! I woulnd't buy a cam that only takes SD, not when I can get a gig of CF for $40-50...but that's just me. As long as the microdrive is around, the mid-high level digicams should retain CF slots (lets hope). If you're looking at pocket cams, then you shoud appreciate the tiny SD cards and their contribution to making the cam that much smaller.

I get the impression that smaller (point-and-shoot) digital cameras are consolidating around SD (except Sony) and the larger ones have always been CF and I don't see much movement away from CF except that a few of the really high-end ones support multiple types now.

Looking at the high-end digital SLR's, every one that I have looked at is CF. Nikon D70, Canon Digital Rebel, Konica Maxxum 7D. They are all type II CF. It's not like CF is dying out... it's just moved up-market.

Several of Canon's point-and-shoot line are still CF. But aside from Canon (and Sony), the small digital camera market has definitely moved to SD.

anybody know if there's a technical reason why they don't get get rid of the all these silly cards and make everything a USB interface? Like having a thumb drive tacked to the camera. Is the interface too slow or something?

I'm in the same position. I've got several CF cards and want my next camera to be CF based. But the only ones I see are the Canon series.

You say that like it is a bad thing. The Canon A series point and shoots are generally regarded as being about the best in their price range as far as features and picture quality. The A75, for example, has manual shooting modes that are missing from most digital cameras in that price range.

The Pentax *stDS (dslr) is SD-based. suprised the heck out of me, but when i look at sd prices and deals from hot deals, there really isnt too much difference between cf and sd.

well, for some reason, SD cards seem to get a ton more rebate deals coming around, but the base price of CF is still lower. I would say a 512 mb card can be had for rebate at $40.. and rebates like these come around every week or so.

SD cards are getting cheaper. Next to CF, they're the cheapest, and they're a lot smaller, so it's a no brainer for newer compact and ultra compact cameras. The larger prosumer/DSLR cameras still support CF cards.
