This great new-model digital camera from Canon retails for $299 at your local Best Buy, etc, but can be had from a great reputable dealer in NYC: www.17photo.com - excellent transaction with them and highly recommended!

How is the image quality on this camera? What was the shipping charge and was there any tax? Does anybody else have any comments on this particular model I know it's relatively new?

2 MP camera with 3x zoom. Not sure why canon is coming out with this camera now, considering they just release the new line of compacts in the form of the s200 and s330.

i think the a20 sold better than the s110 and the s300. canon offers a lot of choices imo

Anybody know the difference between this model and the Cannon s200?

For $40 more you can get a refurb Nikon 990 CNET editor's ChoiceLink to thread... too bad the Nikon 880 is OOS more megapixels and many more features. Personally I got the Olympus C3040 refurb (times two actually) with a 1.8 lens (great for low light and indoor shots) that price cannot be beat but I got the last two of those and they to are now OOS. But that Nikon is Nice!

If you Need a 1.3 Sony full package with 64mb and reader somebody PM me I am now selling my lighty used 1 month old P20

The Compacts Lens suffer due to size and not everyone needs such a small camera. It's like the P7 sony or the S75 same price same features same MP count but the S75 is bigger and has a Carl Ziess Sonar Lens which should take much better shots than the compact sony. but some will want/need the compact package and still go with P5/P7 enven though the S75 is a better overall camera. apples and oranges what it boils down to.

I believe this camera is slightly cheaper at Beach Camera. The only thing I know about Beach Camera is they've been around a long time. Shipping is a tad high. Neighbor just ordered one and they shipped the next day (enroute now). Looks like a very nice little camera.

I bought the Canon A20 in December and am very happy with it. Dpreview implies that the A40 is the new version of the A20:

Dpreview review of the A20

Dpreview comment on the A40

Spec's at Dpreview

Info from Canon (FULL descriptions)

Keep in mind: You WILL need to buy NiMH's and a charger (Get MAHA charger and Powerex batteries!) and you SHOULD buy a bigger CF card. If this camera is as good as the A20, it is a great deal.
(Also, Canon sells an underwater case for the A10/A20/A30/A40, good to 100 feet! I bought it and have taken some pool shots. Fun!)

if you but NiMH get MONSTER brand they are 1800's and will last you a tad longer then the normal batteries.

I was looking for a soft case for the A40 and found this . It sure looks like a waterproof case to me. This would be a really hot deal if you could buy a waterproof case for $13.95.

Rastini- I think I would tend to believe the text and the price rather than the photo. It's not like a price misprint that they might feel compelled to honor.

The A series cameras from Canon are not as compact and light as the Elph line cameras, but they are cheaper. The main difference between the A40 and S200 in terms of features is that the A40 has a 3x optical zoom compared the 2x optical of the s200. The S330 has a 3x optical zoom so I guess you could think of the A40 as a larger version of the S330. The A30/40 are the updates to the A10/20 models just as the S200/330 are the updates to the S110/300. The new models feature manual shutter speeds and aperture control, which are BIG pluses IMHO and better low light images I believe. The A30/40 also added movie capture, which the A10/20 don't have. I personally find that the Elph cameras are uncomfortably small... perhaps it would be okay if they had some ergonomic protrusions like the Nikon 770 instead of flat surfaces all around.

It says case for A20, would it still work?

I think it would work, were it to be an actual waterproof case. However, I agree with gellfex about the text being more accurate than the picture. I'm 99.9% sure this is just a soft case. Of course, as a soft case this would work fine for the A40.

I just did the digital camera dance, and settled on the fujifilm 2600 zoom over the Canon A40. I picked it up from Sears (after pricematch to wherever its cheapest on pricegrabber) for $242. I like this as I can bring it back much easier than a internet store. It has the same optical zoom and Megapizel rating, but it comes with rechargable batteries and 16MB memory card. A better deal in my opinion.

So how do I like it? it takes great picture, and I noticed the shutter lag was smaller than the canon a40

Nice and small point and shoot camera. No confusing settings to play with (good if you don't want to fool with the camera, bad if you do)

FYI

Wrong picture. This is the actual PSC-20 soft case. That would've been a burning hot deal though...

It should work, but don't try them in the water :)

They used the wrong pix for this item, correct waterproof case is selling for $179.95 on their website.

Neighbor got his A40 in from Beach Camera (by the way, Beach Camera is rated pretty good at reseller ratings). Nice little camera and takes very good pics. He couldn't figure out how to get an image into his computer so I got to go over and play for awhile. Definitely a good buy and Beach Camera is apparently a good place to order. Best price I've seen and fast delivery of a quality product.

I've been using this A40 for the last 3 weeks. Excellent cam for the price. I like it better that the S series due to the fact that I can use AA batteries ( Get the Powerex & MAHA charger because you need this !! ) and it fit & hold better IMHO. You'll be surprised of how easy & great shot that can take with this baby. It also has some very advance manual setting such as slow sync flash , spot metering, focus beam assisted in total dark , various ISO setting, slow shutter speed ( great for night shot ) . Lots of stuff for unheard price range.
I am extremely happy with this toy .
