after reading up about all the badass cameras you can get for $600, i decided that i wanted...

A Canon Powershot S300 :)

Its their Digital Elph, tiny camera, 2.1 MP. 3x zoom, takes compact flash. Not to mention it is just so cool! It is around $375 from various vendors now. I just wouldn't bother with a larger camera, this one I can take everywhere :) I'm really looking forward to get it.

Do you want point and shoot? Or do you want to be able to make adjustments to things such as the shutter speed and aperture?

If you have $400 to spend you can get a very good one...

Check out .. Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Kodak.... these are some of the top names in photography!

Go to ritzcamera.com LINK

They have no sales tax and free shipping and I think they have a 30 day money back guarantee !

Good luck!

I think the kodak DX3900 is the only camera commonly in your price range that does 3 megapixels. It's the best consumer digicam that Kodak makes now, they discontinued the DC4800 which was superior. I've seen a print from it and it looks very good. All the rest in that range are 2 megapixels. That's a 50% larger image. 8x10s will come out much better on 3 megapixels, I print my own from a 3 megapixel cam and the pictures look very good. Of course, if you don't care about 8x10s, then this is all kind of moot. . .

But then again, I'm a kodak whore, I have a DC4800. . .

If you want just point and shoot and 2.1MP...then your best bet is the Fuji Finepix 2600. it's a great camera for the money...takes amazing pics

in-depth review

btw i have a 2.1MP camera and 8x10's look damn near close to photo lab quality with my Epson 780 Photo Printer.

Forget anything else, but Canon S300. I bought it for $399.95 (4 cents under your budget :p) from www.buydig.com - the only reliable Internet place that has it for such a low price (others are gray market, or you have to buy overpriced accessories to get that price). It's great, perfect for point and shoot, small, good zoom, great picture taking quality, I highly recommend it.
