Digital Camera

I was looking at a Canon Powershot G5, but I've heard it sucks for action shots. I plan on doing a healthy amount of action shots, so I need something that can do them very well. I heard the cheapest option for that is the Canon Digital Rebel, which is like $1200! Anything cheaper than that?

Nope. In order to take those 'action shots', you have no option but to use DSLR cameras and Digital Rebel is the cheapest one you can get (or, Nikon D70)

You can find the digital rebel for much cheaper than $1200, but where you will run into costs is getting a better lens...so depending on what else you get with it, the rebel will cost you bundle.

If there is no way you can spend that much, I would check out the Sony F717.

I have a Kodak DX6490 that does a great job with action shots. If you're not in a hurry, though, I'd wait for the DX7590 next month.

no matter what you choose, stay away from nikon. It's trash (their digicams anyway)

please tell me you are just trolling, and don't blame your operator error to the camera!

This is the stupidest post I've read all day.

Nikons are awsome cameras....just Canon does an equal or better job, usually for less.

You either go dslr or you don't. It's that simple.

SD9 is a terrible idea for sports. It's great of composed pictures and portraits but it just doesn't offer the flexibility of the DReb is terms of shooting speed and ISO range.

I'm starting to look into digital cameras as I'll be getting one in December or so. I haven't kept up with digicam technology since before 1mp camers were out so I don't know what exactly to look for. Any example shots out of these cameras?

wow your a moron, other then personal pref the cameras from these 2 companys are some exactly the same, they both make great cameras personally i give my nod to Nikon in the high end DSLR market

really you can argue either way in terms of pic quality but there really isnt any difference in teh hands of someone that knows what they are dooing, I like nikon because even tho they cost a lil more you get more features that more then justify the price

thats the one with the Foveon sensor right? do you have it? how is it?

the SD10 is alot better but still lacking compaired to the 10D and D70
Yes, basically the foveon idea is supurb, but just not developed and implemented well enough yet. It needs time to bloom.

My father has at least one of about every dslr due to being a rep and a pro photographer.
The sigma isn't as flexable in all light situations as your standard canon dslr, though it is deinatly a great camera in your normal range shooting.

Realistically as an amateur, you wouldn't notice the difference between any of the dslrs.
It comes down to budget constraints.

I actually fully agree with that you've written here. The offerings at every level are nearly identical in features, size, quality. It comes down to personal preference on name brand, some of the quirks like menu navigation and tiny price differentials.

Stop into the CanonTalk User Galleries for sample pictures of some popular Canon digicams. The Canon A75 is a perennial winner, but you might look into a S- series camera if you're more of a point-and-shoot person. They also come a little smaller.

omg, me too. I own the same as yours. My Nikon died for NO REASON a little after 1 yr and they asked $145 to fix it. Used it only on 3-4 trips, never dropped or anything. So I just bought a canon 1 month ago. NIKON SUX, period.

damn these thread jackers. any answers to my questions? best choice = digital rebel body only and then the $400 lens i linked above?

Honestly, I'd spend $50 more than your $1,200 budget, and get a Nikon D70 kit. It's faster than the Digital Rebel for action photography, and the lens that comes with it is much better than the one that comes with the Canon Digital Rebel kit.

I was told that's the best all-around lens, and I think I would have to buy that. I really don't want to get a lens thats $100 and buy something more expensive later on.

So if it looks like I'll be forced into a DSLR, what's the difference between the Rebel and the D70?

I have that lens on my Elan 7 along with a Canon 70-200mm f4 lens. I'm trying to convince the wife that the digital Rebel would be the perfect addition to my photography gear.
