digital camera that refuses to take rechargable batteries?

spanky

Lifer
this is wierd. i dug up an older digicam that i had stored away (a kodak dx3700), and popped in two freshly charged 1800mah nimh aa batteries, but as soon as i power it on, the battery low light indicator flashes and the cam shuts down. but if i put in a ormal duracell or rayovac battery, the thing powers up normally and is ready to go. is it common that a digicam would refuse to function normally with nimh batteries? or do i just have a camera thats in permanent pms mode?

well rechargeable batteries have lower voltage (1.2 instead of 1.5) so maybe the camera thinks the battery is out

bbq? 😕

Get some new rechargables and give them a go. You may have reached the life expectancy of your NiMH.

what? if you are trying to suggest that perhaps the batteries are not fully charged, then i assure you that it is not the case. i can put them in my a95 and that thing is ready to go. only in the kodak will the batteries appear dead.

No, NIMH batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.2v (IE when fully charged). Alkaline batteries have a nominal voltage of 1.5v. I'm not suprised the camera is complaining. Rechargeable alkalines wouldn't have the same problem.

What the hell is a rechargable alkaline?!? I call SHENS!

Oh and he was correct. Nickle Metal hydrides only operate at 1.2 volts. Most non-rechargables run at 1.5.

There is such thing, but, they didn't catch on. Rayovac sold them and a charger for a bit,and I have the charger (also does nicd and nimh batts).

I'm not sure what the full charge is of Alkalines, I think 1.6v fresh, but my NiMH's read 1.4v when fully charged. In any event, the alkalines do start out higher but I think they drop off quicker whereas NiMH start out a bit lower but stay flat until the very end when there is a very fast dropoff in voltage. It tends to mess up batter indicators, such as those on our cordless mouse which will suddenly just scream out for new batts instead of giving a warning that it' sgetting low. No matter, I always have a spare set ready, just the way it works.

I believe I found the problem. (see bold) 😉

Try a different set of NIMH. I find it hard to believe a camera company would sell a AA camera thats incompatible with NIMH batteries.
