Digital Camera Questions

My first questions is, what exactly do megapixels do for your camera? I understand the more the better, but what do the mega pixels mean?

My second question is, there are different kinds of zooms. Like optical, digital, and advanced digital zoom. Can somebody explain these to me, and what the difference is from a 3X, to say a 2X zoom..

Thanks in advance!

Megapixels tells you what is the max resolution you can take

Zoom bit, ignore everything except Optical zoom, the other type of zoom totaly degrate image quality and just suck in general

Megapixel is resolution. Higher MP = higher resolution = more dots in picture = more detail/bigger size/can be blown up more

zoom: optical zoom is the physical lens zooming, no quality loss, like that on a 35mm cam. digital zoom just blows up what the lens sees, loses quality...optical is the way to go. For the power....think 40mm as 1x, so 2x is 80mm, 3x is 120mm, etc. Rough estimate anyway.
